Good morning,

Encouraging news this morning about the Oxford/Astra vaccine.

And 'Er indoors is back at work next week for the first time since she was told to isolate in March.

Today’s news agenda:

1. Oxford vaccine approved

2. Tiers to be reviewed in England with many areas expected to go up

3. Education Secretary to make an announcement on schools reopening

4. Oh and the four and a half years of Brexit wrangling ends as MPs vote on the trade deal

I doubt it. The headbangers of the ERG and people like Farage will realise that they will be irrelevant and seek to keep it on the agenda - "This was a bad deal. Not Brexit as we wanted it" Give it time...

This goes far beyond 'the deal is fine let's move on', which is the headline from the Guardian interview. Either Starmer's been misreported or he chose to play down the extent to which Labour wants to amend and improve the deal.

Well quite. Wouldn't it have been an idea to get the list published online as soon as the announcement was made?
Wes Streeting MP
@wesstreeting
The first thing that parents will be doing following this statement is looking online to see if their schools are open. The list isn’t yet online. For crying out loud.

I think modern technology would allow someone sitting there with finger poised on "Post list" while watching their boss in the Commons...

And no, this doesn't make any sense either.
Wes Streeting MP
@wesstreeting
Some primary schools will be closed in Tier 4 with NO date to reopen but secondary schools in the SAME areas have a deadline to re open?! How does this make sense?

Three junior front bench resignations by Labour MPs after they abstained in the Brexit vote. I suspect Starmer will view that as a price worth paying.

Well its fair to say many in Cumbria weren't expecting to be moved into Tier 4 from tomorrow. My own district has one of the lowest current infection rates in the country.

From Jonathan Powell.

5 reasons the UK failed in Brexit talks

https://www.politico.eu/article/5-reaso ... xit-talks/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Worth reading it all but...
Second, we fired the starting gun before we had worked out our own position, with the result that we spent the first two years negotiating with ourselves while EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier’s clock was ticking. Triggering Article 50 — the legal mechanism that kicked off a time-limited exit process — before we were ready meant we constantly found ourselves facing a self-inflicted deadline by which we had to concede or face severe economic and political costs. We should have waited until we knew what we wanted and only then pulled the trigger rather than blundering in without knowing our desired end point. This was not the fault of the negotiators but of their political leaders.

DfE at their finest...the original list didn't include our Borough despite it having the 7th highest incidence rate n London and being surrounded by Boroughs where primaries were being shut for another two weeks.

Bewildered Twitter exchanges with HT and other senior leaders ensued - "How is that possible?"

And...we've just been added to the list.

Clowns. Can they not see what mucking around like that does to people?

From the editor of Schools Week...
John Dickens
@JohndickensSW
I've covered some shitshow DfE announcements - but this has been the worst.
Utterly woeful.
Timeline on my edu twitter account is equally slit between utter bemusement and rage.

Oh, and this as he announced that secondaries didn't have to do online teaching other than for years 11 and 13...
Laura McInerney
@miss_mcinerney
The great unanswered question of today. Also, it’s not actually legal to stop providing remote learning to year 7-10 next week. Williamson already passed a law that says schools must do so. He can’t just announce it away!

Once again,
@Nigel_Farage
who did more than anyone else on the planet to get us out of the EU, is denied an honour. What a nonsense this makes of the whole corrupt system.
