There is a reason why the Kent variant emerged in impoverished coastal towns

Has anyone else had the Moderna vaccine? It still feels like a horse has kicked me in the arm. It just ached a bit with AZ but this is genuinely painful.

Daughter & SIL ---

2nd Moderna- == one day in bed !

Booster Wednesday evening
D == one day very painful, next just 'painful'
SIL == 2 days the same arm pain & headache, nightsweats thursday, today pain in underarm gland .

Still better than the possible alternative :-)

Thanks Frog, and yes absolutely.

I must admit I'd kinda dismissed others complaining of arm pain because mine had been so mild, and now I can barely raise my arm above my shoulder without wincing in agony. Serves me right.

I've been so lucky, just a day's tiredness after the first AZ, and close to nothing after the second AZ and the Pfizer booster .
My neighbours including 80+ yo's all got away with it too.

That report from Norway is genuinely scary. One person returns from South Africa, tests negative, then proceeds to spread Covid to 80-90 people in a single evening, all of whom were double vaccinated. If that proves to be accurate then we're really screwed. What the hell can you do to stop an airbourne virus with a transmissibility rate as insanely high as that? I really hope something else has gone on there or we're about to see an exponential rise in infections that makes all the previous waves look like tiny ripples.

Such SCARY reports almost invariably turn out to be exaggerated in several respects.

Its almost as if some have a vested interest in SCARING us witless because......reasons.

DFH?

I'm pretty sure thousands of parents will agree with Starmer's appraisal of Peppa Pig World. I can imagine it's a mind-numbing hideous rip off if you're any more than than about 6 years old. I bet they don't even serve alcohol. Or bacon sandwiches.

A certain newspaper pundit who passed themselves off for a long time as a "Labourite telling uncomfortable truths" - whilst that was never really true, they are now a full-on Johnson shill. Plus they have quite a famous mum (if you haven't guessed who I mean already)

We'll see, but South Africa's infection rate has just doubled in a day, and I don't think the likes of Deepti Gurdasani or Christina Pagel are trying to spread fear. I see highly educated people who are trying to keep the public informed while being horrified by a governent refusing to do anything beyond the bare minimum.

All was exaggerated, there were never ever going to be more than 20,000 flu-like deaths .
So there !

Somewhat more seriously, there's a possibility mooted out there that "O" PERHAPS being far more transmissible, but PERHAPS far less serious, it might drive out Delta ...
https://www.msn.com/fr-fr/actualite/fra ... np1taskbar

There is such a stack of unknowns** that it would be crazy not to reinforce the cheap mitigation options, at the very very least . Deepti Christina & Co haven't even been respected on those ...

**EX: who knows if the apparently mild Omicron still results in vast numbers with some degree of Long Covid ?

Talking of which I'm getting more than a little irked with Twitter's habit of giving me tweets from right-wingers who people I follow, follow...if you see that I mean.

I've just had 2 of DFH's, Paul Embery, and earlier it was Douglas Murray, Claire Fox, and Andrew Neil!

If I wanted them on my timeline, I'd follow them...

Hi All

Some great posts here today on the virus. Thank you.

I have too little time for politics these days. I’m interested in the Starmer Rayner dynamic. Is there a day I can go back to here to update myself? New posts on the topic very welcome of course ;-)

The reporting from SA suggests that Omicron is potentially bad in terms of infection, but not as bad as that reported Norway example.

Which makes me suspect that, if true, something else must also have happened there.

You have to laugh at Hartely-Brewer and her ilk bleating about emergency public health measures being fascism while being completely silent about our own government adding dozens of amendments to a police and crime bill which will make legal protest in this country all but impossible.

I continue to believe she's nowhere near as stupid as she makes herself out to be and it's all a cynical act for money.

Growing distrust in politicians should be of particular concern to democrats and progressives. A lack of trust matters for two main reasons. First, growing distrust can lead to a downwards spiral of democratic decline, with voters disengaging, becoming polarised, or turning to populist leaders and causes.

JH-B used to be a liberal leftist - she was part of the campaign to dethrone Neil Hamilton in Tatton back in 1997, and soon afterwards became a Graun journalist who didn't look at all out of place there. Her dad was also an advisor to the Wilson/Callaghan goverments and Labour MP hopeful.

As with fellow apostate former leftie Allison Pearson you do wonder how much it was genuine to start with, but I'm pretty sure it is now.

I'm seeing some posts about a Durham college meal where the Principal, one Tim Luckhurst, thought it a smart move to invite his old mate and then address the students.

And when some of said students walked about during Rod Liddle - for indeed it was he - the Principal shouted "Pathetic!" at them.

His wife seems nice too...

Funny that pic of Bush Snr is posted, given the news that his old buddy-cum-rival Bob Dole has died.

Will never forget when Malcolm Rifkind harangued him with "you Americans know nothing of the horrors of war!" during the 1990s Balkan conflicts - if I was him I would have beaten the twerp senseless with my mutilated arm

Clip begins a few minutes in

Very clear exposition -- "we've had immuno-compromised patients** ill for seven or eight months, and that's the long period in which mutations occur".

Moral of that story is that where you have populations with poverty and a low level of health care they are ideal incubators of variants . It looks as tho the Kent variant came from such a patient in a classic deprived coastal area . See Cockburn at i-news.

Mitigation of all that is less poverty and better health care ...
it makes sense for the better-off too ....
when will they ever learn ...
