Re: Tuesday 12th May 2015
As far as the EU referendum is concerned, I agree with much of what has been said already.
Labour must not share platforms with Dave and his minions at ANY price - it is what both they and UKIP are praying for.
I don't agree with those claiming Labour shouldn't take part at all, though - run our own "no" to withdrawal campaign with input from unions and other organisations.
We will, hopefully at least, remain relatively united - whilst the Tories fight like the proverbial rats in a sack

Why are we pandering to the Unions. If they haven't got it sorted tough.
We shouldn't fight the last war and presume just because a short leadership campaign would have suited Labour in 2010 it would do so now - the political circumstances are different and nobody expected our result to be this bad (whereas it was at the high end of expectations then)
The party needs to have a proper and frank debate, with as many involved as possible (if any Labour people on here haven't already joined the party, DO SO!)
Not to mention that this time round it is the Blairites who want it all over quickly in the hope of bouncing Chuka on us

They're only 45% of 8% of the electorate. Trouble is, I would expect a very low turnout for an EU referendum so they might have a disproportionate effect on the result. Re: Tuesday 12th May 2015
Something isn't right about this latest election campaign & result.
What in the world are Tories in this for?
It sure as shit isn't to provide responsible leadership for all the people of the UK.
That's what a democratic election is held to decide - who administers public services & safety as representatives of the people.
I've read John McDonnell's article in the Guardian. I like the man for knowing the UK government's job description. He talked a bit about former Labour leader's failure to reform banking. I don't disagree. The UK monetary system is made legitimate by a democratically elected government representing the people of the UK. That kind of power over a nation's economy needed to be adequately dealt with prior to the crash, sure.
That's history. I can't get my head around this outcome of this GE. No way.
I blame Tories who've stolen & continue holding onto power through lying & cheating, by using power to secure a place not won fair. Tories mess people up. They're not in any way reasonable or coherent. It's impossible to negotiate with people crazy in the head. I sat in a waiting room today for fifteen minutes with a television on I couldn't turn off or away from. Police officers have been given more powers to disperse people in public places wholly at their discretion for any reason at any time.
The boogie man set up to attempt to make this palatable? Romanian's without employment coming to the UK to bunk down at the Marble Arch. No kidding. Shameful Tory government. I hope for their journey to complete itself without taking out too many of the people they've no interest in protecting.

The wording of this will be interesting, will it just be radical islamists, or anyone whose views are too 'extreme' for the tories. A lot of laws like this get misused by the authorities.

But I'm not talking about inventing some thing new like the ludicrous efforts on HR. I'm talking about reaffirming exactly that, but in easy clear points and adopted as a keystone for the left, what eds misbegotten written in stone stuff should, could have been, but utterly failed to be. Not about policy but about what underpins thinking.
I've talked about this before, people do not any longer understand what right are, what they mean. You know, like freedom of speech, for instance, how far has that travelled from being a core value? I don't have to say more. To me there are absolutes you don't violate or mess with. I want a left that reaffirms that for everyone, and makes it inarguably crystal clear and accessible to all. Shows exactly where the high ground lies and helps people get there. And undoes the whole narrative of having colluded with Blair or selling off gold or whatever is a permanent stain. It isnt. And the essence of being human is in our failures and being able to move past them. In a Tory world there's no redemption, and no redeeming. We are far better than that.

Don't. Just don't engage with them at all. It's a kind of collective insanity. I used to think otherwise, but having seen it in action close up, I changed my mind. It's beyond rational. You might rescue a person flirting with the idea of voting for them, but you'll not change a full blown kipper, their party is the pretty end of their views.Tony2602 wrote:Evening all, a quick observation for you.
Today, I was unlucky enough to be trapped into a conversation with a couple of kippers. Apparantly Fuhrage is saying in public what "we" are all saying behind closed doors. Stupidly I took the bait, and asked what exactly it was that "we" are thinking. Immigrants, came the answer. Hordes of them. They're getting free council houses, taking over, and they're only pretending to be escaping from war zones and genocide. Fuhrage is right about them, apparantly.
Trying to keep my temper in check, I pointed out that my parents were immigrants, but they seemed to object to my taking their rampant kippery personally. I went on to explain that the lack of social housing was not the fault of immigrants, nor was the tanking economy (construction sector has had three quarters of negative growth), nor was the lack of investment in the don't NHS, transport and so on. They merely gaped at me like landed fish (for pointing at?) and went but-but-but.
Just how do you respond to this kippery without committing murder? Any ideas?
