Morning, and quite a hot day ahead !
This is top of the 'World' section at the Times --
RICHARD SPENCER IN THE WEST BANK
Israel’s settlers seize their chance to snatch land in West Bank
While all eyes are on the Iran conflict, settler gangs are using lethal force to rapidly establish new outposts in Palestinian territory — with apparent impunity

Zionists murder yet again .

Re: Tuesday 7th April 2026
The actual history is during his war with the Persians Croesus followed the military tradition of the ancient Mediterranean kingdoms that you didn't fight in Winter so disbanded most of his army until the Spring whereas the Persians coming from the Iranian highlands found Mediterranean Winters balmy and carried on attacking in a most unsportsmanlike manner.
Cyrus and his Persians could be butchers on occasion like any other invading army but Croesus was spared according to most ancient accounts and was kept as an advisor in Cyrus' court while his kingdom Lydia survived for centuries under Persian, Greek and Roman rule.
Apart from Rome's destruction of Carthage and perhaps the Mede's destruction of Nineveh there's very little evidence of 'destroying civilisations' in the ancient world, hence the incredible longevity of the cities of Mesopotamia, many of which were around for a lot longer than our entire recorded history. Babylon was a parvenu late comer compared to the likes of Eridu which was founded 7500 years ago and was a city for nearly 5000 of those years. Imagine that. "What's this Hadrian's wall rubbish? My house is 2000 years older than that modern bollocks".
My point being that even in previous allegedly more barbarous ages there were limits and despite often endemic warfare destroying civilisations was regarded to be a chillingly grotesque rarity. The Babylonians never indulged in it, or there would be no Jews. Instead they followed the Assyrian model and transported captive populations to dispirit parts of their empire including Babylon for the wealthiest. When the Persians took the city under Cyrus he offered to send the Jews all home but most of them refused to go. Hence the number of historic synagogues throughout Iraq and Iran.
And now, after all those millennia, we're having to somehow learn to exist with deranged lunatics who revel in their own ignorance, not just of history but everything that inspires us to be decent human beings. The ancient rulers of Mesopotamia gave us our first codified laws, they funded the arts and were even amateur archaeologists themselves, digging into their foundations in search of a past older than London has existed. If you lived in Ur 4500 years ago you were guaranteed a basic income under a quasi communist state. Marx was merely repeating frustrations which had come to a head long, long before.
All of these things have happened before, and they will happen again.

Re: Tuesday 7th April 2026
Anyway, signed my new tenancy today (digitally for the first time) so no going back now. While sitting out in the wonderful sun my still current landlord turned up and joined me. He said I could use the garden for as long as I wanted and he'd be giving every tenant 5 grand after they leave when he sells the place for their 'inconvenience'. Which sounds weirdly generous but he hasn't had an HMO licence since Covid kicked in so if anyone were to serve him with a rent repayment order as the council are suggesting to us he'd end up owing us a lot more.
I just want to get out. There's a guy he's let back in the house from prison who was caught intoxicated in his former wife's garden with a bayonet.
