Re: Christmas Bank Holiday Weekend: 26, 27 & 28th December
Good morning. It gives me some pleasure to be able to post this - on Boxing Day in particular.
Opposition to fox hunting hits all-time high with even most Tory voters opposed
David Cameron has promised steps towards lifting the ban, however
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/po ... 86411.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
... Crucially, opposition to the animal killings was just as strong in rural areas as urban areas – with 84 per cent and 82 per cent opposed respectively.
Conservative voters were also overwhelmingly against legalisation, spittling 70 per cent to 27 per cent in favour of keeping the fox hunting ban.
Pollsters Ipsos MORI have asked the public the same question each year for around a decade and found very strong opposition each time.
This year’s figures represent a new all-time high, however...
You didn't think you'd escape a post from me on this subject over the hols, did you? Did you?... At least 50 Conservative MPs have apparently clearly stated that they would oppose a repeal of the hunting ban, according to the campaign group – compared to just six MPs who supported the hunting ban when it was first brought in.
The parliamentary arithmatic means that even if SNP MPs were not allowed to vote on the matter the Government would likely face defeat anyway...
Working on the wild side.

Well, if I'm honest - no. It's good news, isn't it?

Cheers refitman, you could say I did. A few days ago my neighbour mentioned the chap opposite me, about 20 years my senior, she was concerned for his health as he didn't seem himself, slight breathlessness and slurred speech. He and I are always joking and pulling each other's leg. Indeed he has a wicked humour with all, much of it goes unnoticed by many I'm afraid, so quick is he.refitman wrote:Hope everyone got the presents they asked for.
Anyway not having seen any activity since, I called round when I saw the neighbours through their window before picking up my daughter. Apparently he's fine and spending Christmas with a girlfriend. Good on him, that cheered me up no end.
I would close my eyes if I couldn't dream.

Morning (it's before lunch so that's still morning) all.
Hope everyone's having fun,
Quiet day yesterday without the kids so we went off to church in the morning and Skyped them in the afternoon.
Orient this afternoon which, if they play like last week, will be utterly terrible.
Interesting watching reruns of the 1975 and 1979 Top of the Pops. A reminder of how bad the charts could be before 1977...

I'm always a bit intrigued by these "red tape gone mad" stories and wonder how many of the examples arise from people being given the wrong advice...but also the background of the people behind the story.
Criminal records checks for choir members, bell ringers, flower arrangers at highest level for four years

Who?A series of Freedom of Information requests by the Manifesto Club, which campaigns for less regulation in everyday life, found that in 2014/14 there were 199 checks on volunteer bellringers,726 checks on choirmembers, 57 checks on grandparent volunteers and 23 checks on flower arrangers.

There's a surprise...Josie Appleton is a journalist associated with the libertarian anti-environmental LM network, being convenor of the Manifesto Club and having written for Spiked, Culture Wars and the Institute of Ideas and spoken at the Battle of Ideas, the Leeds Salon and the Manchester Salon.

Sexy Fish, London W1: ‘The food? It’s entirely forgettable’
http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle ... o-loughlin
Think I'll pass...But it makes me come over all horrified Edwardian dowager, clutching pearls and gasping: “My dears, the unspeakable vulgarity.” None of this is deterring the place’s natural constituency: already, there have been sightings of Cliff Richard and Piers Morgan. Imagine.
And, naturally, it’s already booked out; we have to accept a 10pm table on a school night. You come to Berkeley Square for your Bentleys and Bugattis, and here is the restaurant that this part of London so richly deserves. We’re told Sexy Fish cost £20m. A table of men beside us hardly look up from their phones all night; as far as this lot are concerned, they might as well have papered the walls with 50 quid notes and have done with it.

Currently, the live flood blog doesn't have comments opened and I'm disappointed. I miss informative commentators writing about their experiences, power supply and Internet connection permitting.
The thread attracts less useful posts. Beryl's spouse must be a regular - demands thread contributors provide documentation they've personally rescued life, property and opened their homes to everyone having the temerity to question and hold Tory government responsible for budget cuts rendering more expensive emergency responses inevitable.

It looks like Leeds is about to see some very serious flooding, with the Aire at all time record highs.
And the shocking thing is that the forecast up here in the hills for tonight is hours and hours more heavy rain. I do hope the folk in the towns and cities down there stay safe.

Re: Christmas Bank Holiday Weekend: 26, 27 & 28th December
We have had a day without heavy rain - welcome respite. But we've had gale force winds.
Those winds have got stronger and stronger and are now accompanied by horizontal lashing rain - which is set to last overnight according to the forecast.
Expecting a power cut at some point - the winds are just so fierce.
Hopefully we won't get bad flooding because we've had a short time without rain ... but we've got two red warnings out for the Pembrokeshire area - the coast and lower Teifi.
Also hoping we are not going to have make an emergency visit to the vets either later tonight or tomorrow. Not good with one of our dogs. She was unable to get out of the car when we came back from a walk earlier - we had to carry her in a blanket.

Absolutely awful. I can't imagine how frightening it must be to be looking out of the window and knowing that your home will soon be underwater. People who are elderly, live alone or too disabled to get out without assistance. Or on your own sick in bed when the electricity suddenly fails, the windows crack and filthy water starts creeping in.
Re: Christmas Bank Holiday Weekend: 26, 27 & 28th December
Good evening.
I live in the sodden North West but fortunately on the coast, away from torrential rivers. I would say that this year even here I have noticed rainwater having difficulty in flowing away down the drains with consequent pools building out into the roadways. I'm sure this is because the council cut back on sweeping leaves and clearing gutters. This rotting organic material must build up at various points of the rainwater system causing problems. Who's fault? We all know and I think they know who they are! They know the cost of everything but the value of nothing! It breaks my heart to see our beautiful countryside and villages devastated by the action and inaction of this miserable Government. Shame on them.
