I can't be the only one who equates the popularity of superheroes with the decline of Christianity in the secular West.
The Olympian gods were nothing more than amoral superheroes, much like the rest of the gods of the 'pagan' world whether it be Hittite, Norse or Aztec. You might think it was the Jews who first thought up the idea of one single all powerful deity but nope. It was the Zoroastrian Persians who the Jews took their inspiration from. When Xerxes invaded Greece he was doing it to expand his regions where 'the truth' held sway whether they liked it or not, all temples to local gods were ceremonially destroyed to be replaced by shrines to Ahura Mazda, the one and only undeceiving god. Now we remember them as the dying embers of a religion that spawned Freddie Mercury.
What was I on about? Oh yeah, so bereft of hope in a society which increasingly leaves people feeling powerless it's no surprise that they enjoy seeing CGI heroes beat the shit out of evil doers. In the past we were supposed to leave that up to 'God' but evidence suggests said deity couldn't give a shit or doesn't exist so why not go back to what the Greeks/Sumerians/Maya believed and have a bit of fun?
