The contempt with which Both the previously major parties are held is their minions monotonously repeating stuff that is fairly obviously suspect and possibly garbage --

Both Labour and Tory governments lay claims on having ‘the fastest growth in the G7’, which is why we should not rush to judgment on economic data

There are two points to be made on this. The first is that in both cases the “fastest growth in the G7” claim was silly. For the Tories, the first-quarter bounce came at the end of a dismal parliament for economic growth, admittedly seriously hampered by the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The UK’s growth rate over that period was the second slowest in the G7, outpaced by France, Italy and, most dramatically, the United States.

Labour’s claim was just as silly. A strong first quarter followed six months of weak growth, with quarterly growth rates of zero and 0.1 per cent respectively, flatlining. It is likely to be followed by much weaker growth in the second quarter, when the economy may not do much better than hold its head above water.
