Morning !
Excellent much-needed one on those UK asylum hotels and the idiocies of over-privatising and under-governing --
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... ulture-war
A series of actions by both Labour and Conservative governments since the turn of the century has brought us to this point. The first was the decision by Tony Blair’s government to make people seeking asylum heavily reliant on state support. Until mid-2002, asylum seekers could take up jobs if they had to wait more than six months for an initial decision on their asylum claim. Much of the press disliked this, saying it allowed asylum seekers to take other people’s jobs. So the government in effect banned them from working. (In many other European countries, people seeking asylum are still allowed to work after a waiting period.)
If a government bans people from working then it needs to provide them with essential support, unless it is happy for them to starve to death on the streets. At first, accommodation was largely provided by local councils’ housing departments. But politicians took a second decision, which was to privatise the accommodation. This began in the late 2000s, but the really important step was taken by David Cameron and Nick Clegg’s coalition government.

I was reading a Business insider article earlier on a high - priced US ex-executive (2023) formerly overseeing 100+ workers on projects who now pays some bills by Deliveroo-ing . His previously stay-at-home wife also. Another example : a Uni IT student working 35hours a week doing three such jobs to cover some expenses, living at home with his parents helping also with uni fees ...
Those naughty illegals taking work away from hardworking laid-off executives ! There will be many more of those with the adoption of more AI , it's already happening.
IF Starmer and Co knew any history, they'd know that Ronald Reagan declared his War on Drugs circa 1982, even naming a Drugs Czar .
Looking around forty plus years later you can see the mighty success of that initiative ?
That was my first thought on hearing of that
Smash The Gangs wheeze . Three-word rubbish sloganising.
Coming from pitifullly inadequate 'minds' .

The above trending thread shows a media blitz on Trump brokering a peace deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia --
NOBEL PRIZE TIME !
Baku was the world’s first oil town: pioneering wells were dug in the 1840s, followed by refineries from 1859. Alfred Nobel and his brothers came in that decade and established what became a major industry, some of the profits from which Alfred spent on establishing the Nobel prize. People take pride that oil produced here helped win the second world war, supplying the Soviet army fighting Adolf Hitler on the eastern front.(( 80% of the fuel for ther Soviet Southern front ))
The Germans and Rumainians were beaten back when they invaded , plus were diverted to Stalingrad ...
I didn't even
know the US was involved, but did know the Azeris wanted improved outlets for their huge quantities of oil and gas .

As with Trump the writing was on the wall. Now years since Oliver Eagleton wrote on Starmer at Novara. And then in his book.....

A major UK LGBTQ+ literary prize, The Polari Prize, has made the genius decision to include a terf author, John Boyne, on their long list. As you can imagine, this hasn't gone down well. Other nominees (and judges) have started withdrawing their names:
And the author that kicked it off has drawn the ire of Glinner - a true badge of pride

Been away visiting my friend in Calderdale, got back to Leeds and it was like walking into a sweaty oven.
The old idea of empires falling was that they descended into decadence, but yeah it's always more complex than that. The Assyrian empire fell because of the alphabet. Seriously. Suddenly it was easier to read and write compared to the cuneiform system which had existed for the previous 2500 years which required professional scribes and maintained the Assyrian/Akkadian language. Now any idiot could write what they liked in Aramaic, the language of most of their subjects, and within a generation the Assyrians, even their elite, were speaking it. Their last king, Ashurbanipal, desperately sent out envoys to all his kingdoms to preserve the documents of the past and bring copies to his grand library to preserve their knowledge for future generations. Then helpfully his palace was burned by the Medes (an Iranian tribe) resulting in the clay tablets being baked then found by Victorian archaeologists.

Don't get me started on the stupid fucking Romans.
As for the Americans. They've been through this kind of nonsense more than once. The problem is we're all of an age that we've grown up during a period of political sanity in regard to our idiot neighbours across the pond but it hasn't always, or even mostly been thus, their ructions have been every bit as mindlessly stupid in the past.
I guess the difference is now, at least in the West, their madness infects our own discourse, which effects the way we see the world (see above), maybe we should just ban them, or at least make them unwelcome. Wave blazing torches and pitchforks outside airports and such like.
We definitely shouldn't be inviting their ludicrous orange king on a state visit. Who wants that? Oh yeah a supposedly socialist party brown nosing a fucking tyrant.
Cunts.
