Back Holiday Weekend 23rd, 24th & 25th August 2025
Re: Back Holiday Weekend 23rd, 24th & 25th August 2025
Afternoon then !
A nice four-minute snippet of useful general knowledge . I can't remember when I learned this, but it wasn't very long afterwards ...
The Biggest Myth Of The Cuban Missile Crisis | BBC Timestamp
EDIT -- the commenters all remember clearly about the missiles in Turkey, but I wonder how representative they are of the general public ?
DJT is slightly older than me, does he know the story ....?

Do you remember Forrest Gate , when an estimated 300cops went to arrest a terrist suspect and managed to accidentally shoot his brother in law in the leg ?
Farrrage and similar inciting emotional demonstrations against the enemy within , an Autumn of Discontent !

It feels insane that the Democrats have decided that they don't want to get behind a candidate as popular as this. He's got people out, using public transport, to do a scavenger hunt!

NINE MONTHS AGO , Nesrine Malik --
In Dearborn, Michigan, the largest majority Arab American city, Joe Biden won in 2020 with around 70% of the vote. Early stats indicate that Harris received something like 40% of the vote. As concerns over the war were raised loudly and specifically, Harris not only continued to ignore and isolate these voices, but also the campaign sent Bill Clinton out to shush them. Harris never even visited the city. But guess who did? That’s right, Donald Trump. And now he’s won in Dearborn and taken all of Michigan.
“Even if he will continue this genocide at a 99% chance,” one voter who cast her ballot for Trump said, “I’m going to take that 1% chance that he’s going to stop it, as opposed to the 100% chance that it’s going to continue under Harris.”

" This brand tension has an analogue in a smaller but no less revealing way in the UK, where students are abandoning Labour. University Labour clubs are disaffiliating from the party, Labour’s youth membership has collapsed, the tail of a longer falling out with Labour leadership over Gaza. But this is a broader confrontation between young voters and a party that has failed to stand for any clear moral principles that appeal to the idealism so necessary to create not only future voters, but activists and campaigners. On Gaza, Labour is anti-starvation, but also anti-protest.
And both the Democrats and Labour are positioning themselves antagonistically to those whose sharper expressions of political vision are hugely popular with those who are abandoning them. Senior Democrats might still not endorse New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, who is posting stunning polling leads. Labour disciplines MPs for rebelling against benefit cuts, even as hundreds of thousands of people register their support for a new party."
