The substack conclusion --
Right now, though, Labour’s strategists seem to be being pulled by the very strings of the puppets they think they are making dance. They have imagined a socially authoritarian working class Labour voter who really is long gone. And as they ventriloquize through their creation, they are following their fantasy’s grievances. The Andy Capp in their head has left containment and is making increasingly incessant demands.
All to avoid the shame of acknowledging the horrible, psychologically troubling truth. Labour has for a long time been a party of the PMC, by the PMC, for the PMC. It’s just, here’s the thing about the PMC. They are the electoral majority. And they are how Labour won, will win, and can only win.
The mythical past where Starmer's dad was really really working class , as tho toolmakers were not a cut above so many others ... especially when they owned their own premises !
First read this morning was Pippa Crerar from last night ---
“The defining mission of this government is to grow the economy, improve living standards and change the way we create wealth,” the prime minister is expected to say.
“An economy that grows not just from the top but from the grassroots. Because growth is the pound in your pocket. It is more money for trips, meals out, the little things that bring joy to all our lives, the peace of mind that comes from economic security.
“But it is also the antidote to division. That’s the most important aspect of national renewal. The way you grow an economy, not just how much, but who and where benefits that can either build a nation or it can pull it apart.
The scriptwriter elbowed in some truisms, but all I know about his Growth Agenda is a trust in trickle down from selling off yet more of the country to Carole Cadwalladr's Techo-Bro Oligarchs and their Oh so generous 'investment' in Airstrip One .

I've come down with a shitty cold, thought 'fuck this', and turned the fire on a night early. Ahhh...blessed warmth and the distinctive aroma of nearly 5 months worth of dust being burned. Luxury.
I see the Labour right are trying to portray themselves as the champions of decency again. During the invasion of Iraq Blair's Labour supporters dubbed themselves the 'decent left', and now we have Starmer taking on the decency mantle anew.
Now the Cambridge dictionary defines decency thus: behaviour that is good, moral, and acceptable in society.
I'd argue stripping state support from people who can't wash or feed themselves is neither good nor moral. I'd argue incarcerating peaceful protesters and treating them as terrorists is neither good nor moral. I'd argue taking a deliberately impotent legalistic approach to confronting the genocide those people are protesting is neither good nor moral. I'd argue betraying those Labour allied themselves with and used in opposition from trans rights to environmentalists is neither good nor moral. I could keep going for quite a while here but you get the idea.
Whether any of those things are 'acceptable in society' is entirely subjective. For a start it depends on what you think society is. The Labour right seem to think it's some sort of atomised chaos that only responds to being given what it wants. Even if that involves human sacrifices and scapegoats. It's Thatcherite dogma writ large. They've had 35 years to come up with something original of their own and have singularly failed.
And yet now they're playing the decency card. As opposed to what? Farage? You want me to vote for you because you're not as bad as a money grubbing racist fascist? Yeah well done, slow fucking hand clap. How have you found yourselves so far behind in the polls to a clown like that that you need my help? Idiots. Go fuck yourselves.
