Lots of hypotheses around, the loneliest being that the the US is shoring up the USD as THE reserve currency, and 'discouraging' anyone wanting to deal in the BRICS' new alternative , but here's one reason why the oil giants aren't falling over themselves charging into Venezuela --

It's becoming increasingly clear that DT had been talking to Maduro for months, quite happy that he is a thug/dictator, and zero interest in that democracy-stuff
so what does Machado believe is happening ...?

Or the security guarantees we gave Ukraine in the 90's when they agreed to give up their nuclear weapons.Frog222 wrote: Tue Jan 06, 2026 8:57 pm What guarantees would last after a change of government. or 'circumstances.'
For example Italy and Romania in WW 2.
Don't get me wrong, I think what we've heard today is good, but If I were Zelensky I'd want those guarantees legally enshrined in as many ways as humanly possible.

Re: Tuesday 6th January 2026
Stuck £30 in the gas meter. Moved everything out of the way of the fire. Cranked it up to full power. Settled down to enjoy an evening of luxurious warmth...and now I'm way too hot.
Which is little wonder because I just checked the thermometer and it's over 23° in here. A place the council want to shut down because according to the inspectors there's a chance of us all freezing to death (really, it's the only Category 1 hazard they've cited which they legally need to close the place down). I'm going to be a witness at the tribunal so I guess I should take pictures of the fire, my thermometer, and myself still being alive. Perhaps sprinkle a few drops of water on my forehead to simulate sweat. Maybe even put on a grass skirt and a coconut bra.
I mean the meters here are so old they can't be turned up anywhere near far enough to meet modern gas prices and we don't pay any standing charge. That £30 will probably last me a fortnight. Yet somehow, despite being better off than all of you in this regard, I'm supposed to be in immediate peril of becoming a frigid corpse? This tribunal is going to be fun.
