Cool here.

AK, do you know/have any thoughts on why Cumbria is having 2 unitary authorities but N Yorks only 1, with 20% more people?

The arrangement for N Yorks is ridiculous, I agree.

At the very least the southernmost part around Selby should join up with the existing York unitary.

DCLG - If you're looking for a well thought out, logical decision you've come to the wrong place.

Can only assume the top brass at NYCC are matier with Jenrick than those at Cumbria.

if you compare, say, people in their 50s who aren't frontline health workers or teachers and don't have underlying health issues, what would be the main factors determining whether or not they'd had covid by Dec 2020?

9. I worry that once again we are watching an unfolding disaster while waiting for unequivocal evidence. Unequivocal evidence on long term impacts will, by definition, take months or years.

Maybe it never will - but so far, trajectory is towards more certain evidence not less.

In Feb 2020 I was asking why we weren't closing international borders.
By Sept 2020 China (and specifically Wuhan) was celebrating end of Covid (cases now are from reintroductions).
If we'd closed international borders in Feb 2020, it seems that we could have controled the virus by Sept 2020. And then vaccinated us as soon as the vaccines were ready, without loads of variants emerging and millions of people dying.
Why did this not happen? It was clear right from the start that COVID was like SARS only easily transmissable by air and not deadly enough to limit spread. I guess it just seemed like a bit too much effort.

AK -- 'supposedly' respectable ! It's relatively recently that the NHS caught up with Reality and admitted that Graded Exercise Therapy could be actively dangerous , and that the 'research' it was based on was garbage . (the PACE studies iirc) .

The 'respectable medical people' also let most of the western world down on something so simple as wearing masks against Covid , because they were obnubilated by a strange desire to have Absolute Proof before recommending them. Even tho masking is obviously pretty harmless , as we've seen .

I see the cranks were out in force today in that London...this one should have been arrested.

And I note there was a placard for UKColumn.org - that's Brian Gerrish's lot - a very long-term crank who used to have a thing about Common Purpose.

If I'm not here, then I'll be in the library. Or the other library.

In relation to both Brexit and Covid, he seems to have simply decided it is all too difficult and boring, and can’t even be bothered to engage with either of them in any meaningful way.

Private education has a lot to answer for. Ministers seem to swan through life thinking 'how hard can it be' and we all suffer the consequences.

Yougov did a poll asking who would have done better than Johnson and the general public apparently thought 'nobody', although the list of possibles included Gordon Brown, so maybe we've got the govt we deserve.

Say hello to a male Gypsy cuckoo bee (Bombus bohemicus).

Cuckoo bees, as the name suggests, parasitise the nests of other bumblebees and exploit the workers while they laze around all day drinking nectar. Come the Bumblebee revolution I expect these perfidious moochers will find themselves in a spot of bother.

I was supposed to be going for a rural stroll today but the infection rate along the entire bus and train route to get to my friend's place is so horrendous I decided to cower at home instead.

I hummed and hawed about it this morning until I read that Piers Morgan couldn't taste wine after his dose of Covid and after laughing at his misfortune I thought, 'I'm not having that'. Reduced cognitive function is one thing, but not being able to enjoy a glass of wine is quite another.

Thanks Frog22.

No wonder it's spreading like wildfire.

I also watched his other video from yesterday using Israeli data showing that the shorter the gap between vaccinations the more quickly protection from symptomatic infection wanes, and it's not a small difference, it's dramatic. He was only discussing the Pfizer vaccine but I can't imagine AZ will be much different, I remember reading an interview with one of its creators saying their data showed 14 weeks to be the optimum time between doses.

Judging by that Israeli study cutting the gap to 8 weeks will have had a significant impact on how protected people are from symptomatic infection, though thankfully not hospitalisation or death, but they knew that at the time, this just further confirms it.

More than 250 convicted of child sexual abuse in UK and Ireland while in Scout movement.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/202 ... t-movement

When my scout master went on holiday something went wrong with his boiler and his house began filling with steam, the neighbours thought it was smoke so they called the fire brigade, who broke in and in their attempts to remedy the situation found loads of child porn.

He never messed with me or my brother but there were a couple of lads, who let's say had problems, who had told us stories of him touching them, which we hadn't believed. In hindsight it was clear he'd chosen them because they were the least credible. He was an artist by trade and there's still a portrait of my brother and I which he drew, hanging on my parent's living room wall. It creeps the fuck out of me every time I look at it.

The guy who replaced him was a violent alcoholic who hit me over the head with a burning hot frying pan.

I didn't stay in the scouts much longer after that, it was just too dangerous.

The live coverage that I've seen has been fine. What's absolutely terrible is their 'Today at the games' stuff. You'd think given the hours it's on they'd provide a decent highlights show in the evening, but no, instead we get a few seconds of footage from an event then Clare Balding blathering on about it with some ex-athlete for ages.

Let's be honest though, it shouldn't be being held at all, although from what I've seen it looks a hell of a lot safer than that insane farce we had at Wembley a couple of weeks ago.

I'm trying to remember what the three things they do are...Trout tickling, spacehopper bouncing, then ballroom dancing. I think I've got that right.

They'll let anything be an Olympic sport these days, last night I watched a hilarious falling over competion which is apparently called 'skateboarding'.

The commentators were saying things like, 'These guys are the best in the world and they make it look so easy.'

Which gives me hope of representing this great nation as an Olympian because I can fall over hilariously without even trying.

I saw my dad doing some extreme ironing last weekend, he had the equipment and everything, put the board up in probably less than 5 seconds. Like it was part of him. Then he began ironing bed sheets. I asked him what the hell he thought he was doing then he reached for a towel.

Any ironing is extreme. Although I used to make one exception. I'd iron a crease down the front of my jeans. These days, I don't even own an iron.

Using potatoes to starch collars is an interesting idea, though. But if you're after that touch of Italian style and flair, why not spray them with the water you cooked pasta in?

Also, creases in jeans?

What? Why?

Even my Dad in his enthusiasm would draw a line at that.

Which is what you'd do, surely, a white line down the front of your jeans.
