Texas schools are being told to teach ‘opposing views’ of the Holocaust. Why?
It really is like we've become sheep.

Edited for clarity: ie: how come the entire country (world) isn't protesting this.
Have we (quiet majority) become so numb to outrage that we barely register it any more?

The UK now has one of the highest weekly rates of new reported cases in the world
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/ ... son-warned

The rest of the world is going to learn a lot from us about how effective vaccines are after 6 months. We'll probably also be able to assess enough cases to establish if there's a causal link between Covid and the development of type one diabetes as well. Oh and we'll have a great opportunity to become world leaders in treating long Covid as we'll have lots of patients to experiment on.

Or we could have carried on with masks and social distancing and proof of negative test for all indoor gatherings, continued isolations and proper test and trace and maybe far fewer people would have to face long term consequences

It's true that the UK isn't alone. NL and Scandinavia have also decided covid no longer exists (despite rising cases and hospitalisations).

I'm looking forward to the 'opposing views' on God and patriotism, for a start.

I'm sure the legislation was careful to establish that God is not a controversial historical, cultural or political topic. This is Texas we're talking about, after all.

Some people not too far away from the UK govt still think we should consider 'opposing views' on climate change. From earlier this year

But we might not be able to have "opposing views" on MPs expenses any more, as they now want them hidden away.

Good afternoon.

Hope all is well here - been a bit on the busy side recently...and currently waiting for an email from 'er indoors to collect her from her chemo session.

Sounds like the PM was not as well-informed as he could have been about his own legislation at PMQs which is a surprise to everyone I expect.
If I'm not here, then I'll be in the library. Or the other library.

Good of Starmer to throw his weight behind an, as yet unread bill, to crack down on 'online hate'. And on the back of an attack by someone who, it appears, didn't have an online footprint.

I'm sure I heard him point out that Cox and Amess *weren't* killed because of anonymous accounts being rude online.

Just as well he did, since almost none of our "journalists" appear willing to do it.

Of course he is also going to say he is for good things and against bad things, especially just days after a major event.

It’s surely the strangest and in some ways the most disturbing period of the pandemic so far, not least because there seems to be collective denial from the government and much of the public that we are still in a pandemic at all.

https://www.theguardian.com/global/comm ... lture-wars
Embracing the culture war was meant to divide society along the cultural cleavage between progressives and conservatives, rather than the economic division between haves and have-nots that the left has traditionally preferred, giving the right a strategic advantage. However, the animosity of the culture war now seems to be playing out in a sort of civil war in the right’s own ranks, and may lead to serious difficulties for the likes of Salvini, Le Pen, Trump and Farage.
Quite Interesting.

It seems increasingly obvious to me that the Government's "Plan" for this instalment of Covid is to complete the shattering of the NHS, undermine the confidence that the public has in it, and destroy the affection that the public has for it. We're already well on the way there. The NHS is fast becoming a field hospital dealing (just) only with Covid. The plan seems to be working and, if Labour has noticed, it's decided not to do anything about it. (Supporting Boris Johnson doesn't count)

The insatiable greed of a vanishingly small number of people is disheartening to say the least.

It's great that McKenzie Scott gave away 8.x billion USD - but why how come anyone's got another 60 billion quid stashed away?
And what's the Musk character going to do once he's got his first trillion?

The world’s 2,153 billionaires have more wealth than the 4.6 billion people who make up 60 percent of the planet’s population, reveals a new report from Oxfam today ahead of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
I feel a seethe coming on.

Javid said he had great respect for the NHS Confederation, but said he would not be moving to plan B “at this time”. He underlined the fact that ministers would be “staying vigilant, preparing for all eventualities”, however, and said that fresh restrictions might need to be imposed if people did not behave cautiously and the situation worsened.
I wondered if "behaving cautiously" might include things like wearing a mask, social distancing and working from home (where possible). But I guess not because:
Infections have been rising sharply since the start of October, but the government is resisting introducing the extra restrictions set out in its winter plan such as masks, vaccine passports and advice to work from home.
