Morning all.
Re: Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st May 2023
Morning refit
NE wind and DRY for ten days so locals can plough & sow maize, and then grumble about no rain for it to germinate ...
Four day Ascension weekend so we're inundated with people coming for the seaside and family reunions , so I've decided to mask-up for my shop when coming back from the beach in a couple of hours .

How many lives has this one got I wonder?
Good to see that civil servants and the course provider have some integrity left at least.

If I'm not here, then I'll be in the library. Or the other library.

Well if Sunak actually *wants* rid of her, this is a terrific pretext.

I asked the friendly on the supermarket till how she knew there was a local increase in covid .
"Customers tell me they have it''
"Are they masked?"
"No".
Meanwhile, on the joy of repeated infections --

As with BoJo (of whom she is, surprisingly, a huge fan) I honestly don't know if she has any concept of "truth" anymore.

Interesting article, more detail in the thread, one example of Lab prefering a Tory alliance to one with the Greens .
FFS ? .

And in some places (such as Worcester and Hyndburn) the Greens have done deals with the Tories.
Bastani is about as reliable a political critic as Hodges or Rentoul.

You'll have to give more detail about that. Were those deals with the Tories imposed on the local councils, against their wishes, as with the Labour situation?AnatolyKasparov wrote: ↑Sun 21 May, 2023 7:55 pm And in some places (such as Worcester and Hyndburn) the Greens have done deals with the Tories.

NOT Aaron Bastani ! Did you read it ?The actual article was written by

Labour apparently behaving badly is of course going to benefit others, as Aaron writes, including I would definitely add, the Tories .

I mean Bastani's spin on it, obviously.

So, you've not read the article then? Because Bastani's take isn't exactly out of left field.
Methinks you might have a bit of prejudice against a person who is outspokenly anti-Starmer.

Martin Amis was a dick.
His prose wasn't just knowingly clever it insisted that you recognise how smart it thought it was which instantly says 'dick' and then he got into bed with the Muslims are bad war on terror crowd and there was no coming back from that.
I read a couple of his books while trying to pretend I was clever while going out with a Swedish girl who was doing a creative writing degree. It was awful, I had to keep up the pretence for three fucking years. I read everything from Strindberg to Proust. And do you know what I learned? That I wanted to go back to reading about spaceships and dinosaurs.

I mean I have no confidence in them at all. Zero. Nada. In fact given their current trajectory I expect them to make my life worse.
And I don't mean airy fairy EU shit I mean them happily doing nothing about the stripping of sickness and disability benefits from many thousands of people. I expect they will do precisely fuck all while offering empty words of sympathy they can shove up their collective arse.

Well, despite the near universal hate for Labour on here it seems they are going to be in government fairly soon. So we will see, won't we.
But until we deal with *the* central problem in this country - a media that sees anything to the left of Blair as basically illegitimate - we are unlikely to get things becoming as good as they might otherwise be.

What do you propose? I'm thinking a certain viscount Rothermere should be slowly eviscerated by a giant assembly of teeth, while the Barclays should wake up in terror to find themselves unhappily dangled over a volcanic precipice.AnatolyKasparov wrote: ↑Sun 21 May, 2023 10:36 pm Well, despite the near universal hate for Labour on here it seems they are going to be in government fairly soon. Let's be fair here, I read the Telegraph and they gave Starmer an opinion piece over the weekend, along with Camilla Tomminey telling us we'd reached peak woke and Daniel Hannan explaining why the failure of the right was everyone else's fault.

You have said yourself how politics seems less, well, insane in Scotland. Part of that is surely the media being a bit less awful there.
This is one reason why its a genuine shame the "alternative left" media have become so attracted to conspiracy theory rabbit holes since Corbyn went. It did look for a while that they might be building something important and with real potential influence.

It's mental in its own way, but yes, less mental than in England. I must point out it's not England's fault that it was populated by arseholes.AnatolyKasparov wrote: ↑Sun 21 May, 2023 11:31 pm You have said yourself how politics seems less, well, insane in Scotland.
