IIRC Osborne did say that he wanted to make the welfare state the same size as it was in 1945 - ie: pretty much non-existent in reality.rebeccariots2 wrote:Is this a joke?

There has been one notable successful derailment of privatisation. The Land Registry privatisation was stopped in its tracks earlier this year after a high level leak to the press about the govt's plans for it.

Worry not, it was received, it's simply that the PM system is as poor as the last site for FTN. I'd encourage you and others to share email addresses with each other to avoid such nonsense. Anyway, we shall rearrange!AngryAsWell wrote:Ernst, have pm'ed you but message seems to be in my "out" box with no indication to say if its been sent....and no way of resending. ack.

David Cameron "significantly misrepresented" official statistics to "baselessly" claim that foreign workers had taken most new jobs in Britain, the press watchdog has concluded.
The Press Complaints Commission also ordered the Daily Telegraph, which featured the Prime Minister's "misleading" assertion, to publish a correction to clear up the "inaccuracy".
The watchdog issued this politically embarrassing judgement in what marks the Prime Minister's second official rebuke over his contentious Daily Telegraph article.
Cameron made the controversial claim as he boasted about how the coalition's immigration changes are helping build a "different kind of Britain", writing: "Progress is being made: while most new jobs used to go to foreign workers, in the past year more than three quarters have gone to British workers."

Morning all.
The Mail are saying that ex Country File presenter Miriam O'Reilly likely to be standing as Labour's candidate for the Heywood & Middleton by election.
@Por Favor - I notice a PM I sent you the other day is still in my outbox.
It was a response to you writing on the thread that you had not realised I'd lost my cat.
Notice AngryAsWell mentioned PM problems last night, so not sure if it has worked properly.

I know what you mean.
Went to bed after seeing the Observer poll on the BBC News banner which showed a decent No lead.
Wake to find one showing a Yes lead.
It is going to be a nail biter for the early hours of Friday.
Just want to say that my feelings yesterday were not aimed at Ephie and Jack Pranker, who seem to have very reasonable arguments as to why they want Yes to win.
My frustration is with those who invade Cif and Twitter lying that the Tories are in the lead for Westminster, pretend that Miliband is no different from Cameron, that MI5 has fixed the poll result, that it is all a Westminster conspiracy, that we are all Tories, and the horrible anti-English bigotry.
Heard a Yes & No voter on Radio 4 last night and they seemed much more normal, which was reassuring.
Still reserve the right to not buy Scottish goods and services though.
If Yes voters don't care what happens to the UK economy or political set up why should UK shoppers have any loyalty to boosting the Scottish economy ?

Re: Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th September 2014
Marr asks Salmond about the killing of David Hains, Salmond responds by calling it an act of barbarism, praises his family for the courage his family have shown, a Scottish equivalent of COBRA will have a meeting.. All pretty standard stuff in such circumstances..
Marr, the polls look as though they are going down to the wire, would you be happy with a small win. Salmond, Harold Wilson once said a vote of one is a majority, it would be up to us then to work for the people of Scotland. Asked if the No prevails he pledges there wont be another vote for another generation..
He is basically talking about bring all the peoples together after the vote, whatever the outcome, this interview so far is very much about reconciliation after the event, Marr hasn't asked any killers yet.

Re: Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th September 2014
Talks about the team that negotiate the terms after a Yes vote, all inclusive seems to be the mantra.
The currency, the usual stuff off Salmond, it's in everyone's interest to come to an agreement, the Scottish economy and the rUK, very much what he has said in the past, he talks about agreements with the BOE regarding interest rates and general agreements within the economy, Marr mentions Mario Draghi,Salmond dismisses him. Salmond again states the separation talks can be done within 18 months, the EU will also be agreeable as they are already in the EU.. Nobody in the EU would want to exclude fish rich, oil rich, export rich Scotland.
TTIP is brought up by Marr, Salmond talking about privatisation of the NHS, he fails to mention that Burnham has stated the NHS will be exempt, concentrating instead on the risks of privatisation. The Queen now, which they want to keep as well.. There won't be a referendum on the monarchy in the event of a Yes vote.. All in all pretty lightweight tbh.

Re: Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th September 2014
Marr starts off by asking Darling about the promises of extra powers for the SP, Darling replies that all parties agree to it, Scotland will be a stronger country for it, within the safety of a larger economy, Marr already tougher on Darling than Salmond, the Labour party is saying different things to the other parties. Darling replies that days to go there are still numerous unanswered questions, Darling states that Salmond seems to think that everyone will wake up on Friday and fall into line with Salmond, and that's before we get to Europe.
Darling doesn't want his country subjected to years of uncertainty. Marr says the No campaign has not put up a passionate defence of the union, Darling doesn't accept that view, we fought wars together, created the NHS together. Marr says to 2015 may bring the last Labour in London, the 2015 may be delayed, Darling wont accept that, as the NO vote will win, and no one will stand for an extension the coalition. Darling agrees with Salmond that this must be a once in a generation vote, no one wants to go through this again, he says that nationalism ebbs and flows and.
Darling calls the campaign at times menacing, he has never seen anything like it in 35 years, the quiet majority are determined not to be bullied. He wants to, in the next five days concentrate on the NHS, the economy and what's best for Scotland, Marr finishes off by asking Darling about the overnight news.. Little bit tougher interview than Salmond had, shame he didn't ask wee Eck about whats going on the streets.

Salmond talks about 'export rich Scotland'.
Maybe someone with more of a brain than mine could check this out.
According to the Scottish Government's own information:
''International Exports: The total value of international exports from Scotland in 2012 (excluding oil and gas) is estimated at £26.0 billion, of which £15.4 billion was from the manufacturing sector and £8.7 billion from the services sector
Rest of UK Exports: The total value of exports from Scotland to the rest of UK in 2012 (excluding oil and gas) is estimated at £47.6 billion, of which £25.3 billion was from the services sector and £12.7 billion from the manufacturing sector''
So Scottish exports to the rest of the UK are a lot more than their combined exports to countries like USA, Netherlands, France, Germany, and Norway.
What if there is a consumer backlash from the rest of the UK ?
That 'export rich' position would look a lot less rosy.
I suppose that presumes UK consumers can find alternatives to the Scottish goods and services, or would want to switch of course.

Letsskip introduced the concept of the 'raspberry jam question' earlier on up the thread. As in - where will I decide to buy my raspberry jam from should Scotland go independent ....yahyah wrote:ErnstRemarx wrote:Pretty piss poor from both sides there.

I suppose there might be an exodus of customers from Scottish Power and its energy company subsidiaries ... they are one of the most obvious.

To me it could be the unconscious buying of goods, English strawberry jam, or Scottish strawberry jam, what would I take off the shelf, I could change my buying habits without realising it, I hate even thinking this, spent a lot of time in Scotland, daydreamed of moving up there, me and the hounds, how has it come to this?rebeccariots2 wrote:Letsskip introduced the concept of the 'raspberry jam question' earlier on up the thread. & HM Revenue & Customs used to have a big centre in Scotland, probably much reduced now since cuts though.
Can't see the rest of the UK being happy to have call centre & office jobs in a foreign country.

Just a couple of weeks ago I wouldn't have even thought this question could come up, but attitudes in some parts of the 'Yes' campaign can only put it on the table; and I'm not talking about comments from the radicals, I'm talking about relative moderates saying things like "five million can't save sixty million, we need to look after ourselves". I'm sure not everybody feels that way but comments like that, flicking the metaphorical two fingers at everybody south of the border, are the ones that will be remembered.

Well - Tunnock's Teacakes, haggis and, yes, raspberry jam spring to mind on the comestibles front but I can't say that I buy any of those items in quantity. However, who know what items, of any sort, which are\were labelled as a product of the UK will\might turn out to be made in Scotland?rebeccariots2 wrote:Letsskip introduced the concept of the 'raspberry jam question' earlier on up the thread. Scotland in the EU would perhaps get over any labelling problems if the Scots fear any sort of backlash but will people remember (from the interim) where things come from? Will they care? And there must be a certain cachet (eg for fresh produce) attached to being produced. and labelled as being such, in Scotland. Possible dilemma there . . .

There are thing like video games and manufacturing items that are exported to us.
Would appreciate it if anyone comes across a good list of Scottish products, think it's a lot more than kippers, raspberries and shortbread.

Re: Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th September 2014
Should rUK consumers decide to source their products from non-Scottish areas, that would make a considerable dent in the Scottish economy, as 70% of Scottish exports/business is sent or performed south of the border. It is a sign of the bitterness stirred up by the campaign that people should be contemplating boycotting Scottish goods and products.
Re: Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th September 2014
I don't think I'd be doing any boycotting, by the way.
Edited to add -
There wouldn't be much left, after all, if you take Cadbury, Nestle, Israel etc etc into account!

That's very good. A little of his detail isn't quite right, but he's ticked all the boxes when it comes to the economic arguments against independence in the form offered by Salmond. I'd post the link on the Graun, except it would probably cause the cybernats to go completely bonkers and hunt him down.letsskiptotheleft wrote:I watched this last night, very balanced and compared to some of the stuff very sane.
