Morning all.

Not much to report from ROT Towers - wife was going to work on helpline today...but told last night by oncology consultant that she needs to self-isolate, so is trying to find out whether she can work from home and have calls diverted to here.

I'm still ploughing through the post-war building survey. I found yesterday that a mysterious building that popped in a High Street on a post-war was built in 1940 as a British Restaurant.

I've seen no April Fools , even on a glance at the Politics Live Blog .

Sang Happy Birthday to my younger daughter who is Home Schooling her three sons ... plus 180 lycée students .

Eleven years ago her Easter Hols began on the First , and my present to her was being struck down ,speechless and paralysed in Avranches Hospital . I usually celebrate that by having my first dip in the sea, but I'm only allowed to go to the nearest shops 5kms away , and the beach is 9kms further west !

"Alok Sharma defending the govt's performance" translates as "attempting to defend", and failing .

Around here, as in the UK, colleges lycées individuals and businesses are 3D printing face visors for hospitals GP's , visiting nurses and all other sorts of care workers. More and more initiatives arising also for making washable cloth masks which are a great help . A friend started this afternoon, now we have to spread them around . I was very shocked to see staff unprotected in our local small supermarket , so will start in the few shops still open.

Beer 1.

Sonoma Pale Ale. 3.8%. Track brewing company, Manchester.

Look - Extremely cloudy. Not settling at all.
Taste - Extremely citrusy, almost like sherbert.

Drinkable but doesn't taste like beer, more like watered down Lemsip.

Not a good start.

Look - Pretty cloudy again, I'm beginning to think it might be the glass.
Taste - A pleasant refreshing no nonsense light ale.

I've had this many times before, but never from a can. North bar is a chain in Leeds that has a main bar in Town and then a small scattering of micro-pubs in the suburbs. They stock beers from all over the world along with a few staples from their own brewery and it's pretty pricey. But this you can get for £3.50 a pint, which compared to the rest of their stuff, is relatively cheap. They're a bit hipster and trendy but the people tend to be nice, especially the staff, and they play good music.

This is most obvious, obviously, but something quite interesting is that my memory of seeing it is that it was enormous - a real 'whole of the wall' picture even in a big gallery, but from looking it up it's biggish - five foot by two and three quarters - but nothing like as big as I remember.

There's a whole debate about 'masking-up' which demonstrates how politicos and 'their' experts pass supposedly cunning messages to the public , who are of course unable to deal with any truth .

So ................ instead of saying to the public:

" Please leave the official clinical masks to the hospitals etc, and here are the results of tests from Cambridge and other centres which prove that DIY ones can be really pretty good , so could you make your own from our specs "

They say to everyone

"YOU do NOT need them, you are wasting your time"

as a cunning ploy to stop a run on supplies. What happened of course is that lots of people thought it was bullshit, and the wideboy arbitrageurs bought up stocks all over the place, as they did with alco handgels.

In fact, masks for everyone, especially in shops, public transport, DO cut down on infections .

So now ,even Dr Fauci is slowly coming round, along with the Oaf in the White House !

Look - Now that I've given the glass a proper clean this one looks quite appetising.
Taste - Pleasantly flowery without being overbearingly hoppy. A nice balance.

According to the label it has a 'silky mouth feel', but as I have no actual silk to put in my mouth to compare I'm going to have to take their word for it. If they'd said it had a 'polyester mouth feel' then we'd have been in business.

Two, in a scenario where hundreds of thousands of people were dying, the NHS would become overwhelmed and the average age of the people dying would likely fall, so the number of life-years lost is probably an underestimate, and possibly an enormous one if the average age of death fell as the NHS had to prioritise younger patients. And the misery involved would be appalling. It would mean people dying in their beds alone at home, some of dehydration and starvation alongside their pneumonia, with no palliative care of any kind.

I and @Sam_Dumitriu have written about keeping the UK economy alive during the coronavirus shutdown:

1) Pay SMEs to keep on workers
2) Allow all workers to go on 'maternity leave'
3) Income-contingent loans for all
4) Expand and relax Universal Credit

We've just created an additional £200bn in Quantitative Easing - fine, let's use it to prop up businesses rather than buying Gilts as generally happens.

I read bits of that Toby Young article, right from the very beginning it was bollocks when he clearly didn't understand what 'average' meant when it came to lifespan then I skipped to the end and was unexpectedly rewarded when he explained he'd been bedridden for a week.

First, Young argues that we should judge that the life expectancy of people who would die of Covid-19 is one year – roughly the difference between the average age of those who’ve died so far in Italy (79.5 years old, apparently) and average life expectancy in the UK.

But the average life expectancy of someone who has made it to the age of 80 is more than 81 – according to the UK’s National Life Tables, someone who is 80 years old has a life expectancy of about nine more years. If this is counterintuitive, remember that average life expectancy includes people who have already died before reaching the age of 80. For these purposes we need to exclude them, which leaves us with many people who will live well past the average.

Precisely, it's like looking at the average lifespan of people in say...the late 1900's, it fluctuated around the mid forties, but that didn't mean lots of people in their mid forties were dying, the average was dragged down by high infant mortality, if you got past 15 you were more likely than not to live to your 60's and beyond.

Things are getting a bit weird. There do seem to be quite a few Friedmanesque monetarists now advocating chucking large amounts of money around, which seems to go against everything I thought I knew about them. But then I'm not an economist and am not going to do a Toby Young and pretend to understand something I clearly dont.
