Morning all.
Not much to report from ROT Towers - wife was going to work on helpline today...but told last night by oncology consultant that she needs to self-isolate, so is trying to find out whether she can work from home and have calls diverted to here.
I'm still ploughing through the post-war building survey. I found yesterday that a mysterious building that popped in a High Street on a post-war was built in 1940 as a British Restaurant.
How is everyone?

Re: Wednesday 1st April 2020
I've seen no April Fools , even on a glance at the Politics Live Blog .
Sang Happy Birthday to my younger daughter who is Home Schooling her three sons ... plus 180 lycée students .
Eleven years ago her Easter Hols began on the First , and my present to her was being struck down ,speechless and paralysed in Avranches Hospital . I usually celebrate that by having my first dip in the sea, but I'm only allowed to go to the nearest shops 5kms away , and the beach is 9kms further west !
"Alok Sharma defending the govt's performance" translates as "attempting to defend", and failing .
Around here, as in the UK, colleges lycées individuals and businesses are 3D printing face visors for hospitals GP's , visiting nurses and all other sorts of care workers. More and more initiatives arising also for making washable cloth masks which are a great help . A friend started this afternoon, now we have to spread them around . I was very shocked to see staff unprotected in our local small supermarket , so will start in the few shops still open.
The first four and a half minutes of this show WHY, at 4.28 a comparison to hospital kit --

This is longer, starts off slowly for 90 secs, rambles a bit , but much good info. I DID NOT KNOW that the Czechs are now 99% 'masked' ! A good start would be to make them compulsory if you want to go into a shop as in Hongkong, Cuba, and very likely more soon --

To celebrate, as I couldn't meet anyone or do anything, I indulged myself in a stupidly expensive craft beer shop. Now let's see if I've wasted my money.
Beer 1.
Sonoma Pale Ale. 3.8%. Track brewing company, Manchester.
Look - Extremely cloudy. Not settling at all.
Taste - Extremely citrusy, almost like sherbert.
3/10
Drinkable but doesn't taste like beer, more like watered down Lemsip.
Not a good start.

Well that was absolutely disgusting, but I'm on familiar ground with this next one.
Beer 2.
Session Pale Ale. 3.9%. North brewing company, Leeds.
Look - Pretty cloudy again, I'm beginning to think it might be the glass.
Taste - A pleasant refreshing no nonsense light ale.
8/10
I've had this many times before, but never from a can. North bar is a chain in Leeds that has a main bar in Town and then a small scattering of micro-pubs in the suburbs. They stock beers from all over the world along with a few staples from their own brewery and it's pretty pricey. But this you can get for £3.50 a pint, which compared to the rest of their stuff, is relatively cheap. They're a bit hipster and trendy but the people tend to be nice, especially the staff, and they play good music.

This is most obvious, obviously, but something quite interesting is that my memory of seeing it is that it was enormous - a real 'whole of the wall' picture even in a big gallery, but from looking it up it's biggish - five foot by two and three quarters - but nothing like as big as I remember.

Friend,
As we've seen recently with coverage of the coronavirus, the mainstream media will stop at nothing to advance its agenda. They are actively trying to divide instead of unite us in such a critical time. All while American values, common sense, and faith are being cast aside. As a result we’re losing the ability to have reasoned conversations about what really matters. So now what?
The good news is there’s a new daily news email for people who want to stay informed, who value civil discussion, and who love the truth.
It's called "Up First," and it's from the news network The First, a network dedicated to true ideas, fresh voices, and the American values that this country was founded on.
Every morning our friends at The First send out the essential stories you need to start your day, as well as a unique take on what's going on in this country. It's a crucial email that prepares you to have informed conversations about the things that matter.
We encourage you to check it out right now. Sign up for the Up First email today and take back your inbox with the values you hold dear.
Yes I Want the Up First Email!
P.S. In addition to signing up to receive the daily newsletter, you can also watch the new network, The First, 100% FREE here. No gimmicks. No trials. No lies. It features Dana Loesch, Buck Sexton, Jesse Kelly, and Mike Slater. You'll find everything you need to watch when you click the button above.

Beer 3.
Continental Pale Ale. 4.5%. Duration farmhouse brewery, Norfolk.
Look - Now that I've given the glass a proper clean this one looks quite appetising.
Taste - Pleasantly flowery without being overbearingly hoppy. A nice balance.
8/10
According to the label it has a 'silky mouth feel', but as I have no actual silk to put in my mouth to compare I'm going to have to take their word for it. If they'd said it had a 'polyester mouth feel' then we'd have been in business.

I see that Sam Bowman - someone whose views I disagree with in general while admiring his thoroughness and lack of general sneering that normally goes hand in hand with free market types- has answered Toby Young's "Oh well, people will die anyway" line from yesterday.

Why the coronavirus shutdown is worth it
https://thecritic.co.uk/why-the-coronav ... -worth-it/
Quite. Two, in a scenario where hundreds of thousands of people were dying, the NHS would become overwhelmed and the average age of the people dying would likely fall, so the number of life-years lost is probably an underestimate, and possibly an enormous one if the average age of death fell as the NHS had to prioritise younger patients. And the misery involved would be appalling. It would mean people dying in their beds alone at home, some of dehydration and starvation alongside their pneumonia, with no palliative care of any kind.

Roger,
I read bits of that Toby Young article, right from the very beginning it was bollocks when he clearly didn't understand what 'average' meant when it came to lifespan then I skipped to the end and was unexpectedly rewarded when he explained he'd been bedridden for a week.
Thanks for the link to the riposte, I'll give it a read when I've sobered up.

Re: Wednesday 1st April 2020
From Roger's link.
Toby Young is, and always has been, a moron.
Precisely, it's like looking at the average lifespan of people in say...the late 1900's, it fluctuated around the mid forties, but that didn't mean lots of people in their mid forties were dying, the average was dragged down by high infant mortality, if you got past 15 you were more likely than not to live to your 60's and beyond.First, Young argues that we should judge that the life expectancy of people who would die of Covid-19 is one year – roughly the difference between the average age of those who’ve died so far in Italy (79.5 years old, apparently) and average life expectancy in the UK.
But the average life expectancy of someone who has made it to the age of 80 is more than 81 – according to the UK’s National Life Tables, someone who is 80 years old has a life expectancy of about nine more years. If this is counterintuitive, remember that average life expectancy includes people who have already died before reaching the age of 80. For these purposes we need to exclude them, which leaves us with many people who will live well past the average.
Toby Young is, and always has been, a moron.

Beer 4.
XX Session Pale. 4.6%. Crooked brewery, Leeds.
Look - I didn't bother cleaning the glass so back to cloudy.
Taste - A pretty standard IPA.
6/10
Boring but perfectly drinkable.

Bloody hell. The cat's just brought in a live mouse (at least I hope it's a mouse) which is currently hiding under the sofa. I can't move the sofa.

Re: Wednesday 1st April 2020
Things are getting a bit weird. There do seem to be quite a few Friedmanesque monetarists now advocating chucking large amounts of money around, which seems to go against everything I thought I knew about them. But then I'm not an economist and am not going to do a Toby Young and pretend to understand something I clearly dont.
