The last time Germany was the "Sick Man of Europe" was almost exactly twenty years ago , I seem to remember an Economist article titled exactly that ...
and of course the subsequent apparently very good times were built on shaky foundations . Katya Adler on iirc Saturday's Today described the underinvestment in infrastructure , especially the hundreds of aging and unsafe bridges . €'s invested instead in the East but that couldn't replace the Old habits of thought from years of Soviet mentality . Also widespread use of cheap labour from newer members of the EU ....
