Re: Thursday 6th October 2016
On a theme this morning... as preparation for a bonfire of all those pesky regulations in the glorious post-Brexit world:
Whirlpool told to do more to ensure safety after tumble dryer blaze
Manufacturer faces calls to take faulty machines out of use after report finds one caused serious tower block fire
http://www.theguardian.com/money/2016/o ... ryer-blaze" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Advice from Whirlpool up to now has been, 'you can keep using these potential death traps we manufactured, if you don't leave the room while using them just in case they burst into flames'. I may be paraphrasing a touch there, but it seemed to me to be the gist of it.
Edit: the tower block fire is not the first to have been caused (allegedly) by this model of device. It has a known fault that can cause the devices to catch fire. Whirlpool are not doing a recall, they're doing a retrospective fault correction of devices in situ. It seems that all the fire brigade can do is ask them to do something more and cross their fingers in the hope that they will.

Incidentally, the main take home message from that Whirlpool article is that the UK doesn't appear to have in place any national product recall mechanism. So companies can risk your life with their faulty goods if they're willing to risk their bottom line by taking a chance on some bad publicity should things go wrong (hello Samsung) being less bad than the losses from having to pull their product and initiate their own full recall.
But, you know, pesky, bureaucratic red tape from evil Brussels/lefties (delete as applicable). Holding back British businesses. Blah, blah, blah.

True. But this one was apparently in the man's shirt pocket. And, if the leaks regarding this product's development (if I remember right, production schedule accelerated with corners cut to beat the iPhone 7 to market) are true, then most definitely not looking good for Samsung.StephenDolan wrote:TBF there's a risk of any phone battery igniting on a plane (phone slips into the seat, seat is tilted back and crushes the battery) but it's not looking good for Samsung.HindleA wrote:https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... ery-flight

Crazy talk, Joan. Crazy talk. Even your own paper can barely bring itself to mention Leveson these days.Surely such allegations, indeed all issues raised by the case, demonstrate the urgent need for ministers to set up the second part of the Leveson inquiry, specifically to examine relationships between the police and the press and whether they work towards the public good. It appears to have been parked. The very public fall of Mazher Mahmood tells us it must now be set up without delay.

I couldn't quite believe the result (as most here know, I have a particular dislike and distrust of anything Murkydochian)....on circumstancial evidence as well....however, if the prosecution are saying 'we reckon you deleted emails, had lots of conversations following the giving of statements and didn't 'accidentally' break the phone involved', the least they (Mahmood/Smith) could've done would've been to take the witness stand to plead their case...but no...so there's now a very large and smelly can on the floor and the putrid Murkydochian worms are everywhere.
....there was then this from Peter Jukes/Byline...
...so that's a Daniel Morgan connection and....
It was announced after the verdict that 18 civil claims were being launched against Mahmood which could total some £800 million - a figure that would "dwarf" those brought following the phone-hacking scandal, according to media lawyer Mark Lewis.
http://www.aol.co.uk/news/2016/10/05/th ... -his-face/
...and also, we might finally see some justice for John Alford...
Indeed, it wrecked it so badly that it effectively ended his television and singing career at the age of just 25.
Alford's case in 1997, a classic example of a Mahmood sting, was one of the first fake sheikh entrapments to catch my attention.
In almost every detail the subterfuge involved mirrors what happened in 2013 to Tulisa Contostavlos, whose trial on a drugs charge was abandoned after the judge ruled that Mahmood may have been guilty of lying and manipulating evidence.
https://www.theguardian.com/media/green ... -thepeople
....and, of course, more may now be made of the connections to Orgreave, Hillsborough etc etc (maybe not Mahmood per se, but Murkydochia/police/politicians)...it is, however, all spiffingly fantabulous...that wonderful Mrs May(not) has only had one meeting through the back door with James Murdoch and one (very special) meeting with the great wrinkly old goat itself...after which, Mrs May(not) out-UKIPs UKIP at the Tory Conference...very much quelle fracking surprise
Efforts really should be made to implement Leveson 1 immediately....as, of course, The Clouncy Funt in all his pomp 'promised' he would do, if it wasn't 'bonkers'...and we all know about The Clouncy Funt and his promises, don't we
...and by way of an aside, the publisher of Shameless Bettinsons book? MD is ex-Tory candidate Iain Dale (of LBC/Conservativehome fame) and company owned by Ashcroft (I researched it, as I was convinced (with my tin-foil hat well settled in place) I'd see the ice-cold tendrils of Murkydochian putrefaction all over it...but it wasn't...it was a different nest of Tory Hegemony)

The coalition may be promoting the controversial practice of fracking for gas because senior figures from that industry sit in the heart of Government, campaigners have warned.
The former BP boss Lord Browne, Centrica chief executive Sam Laidlaw and BG Group director Baroness Hogg have all been accused of the potential for conflicts of interest, as they hold senior advisory roles at a time when the Government is heavily promoting fracking.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/po ... 07589.html
The Tory peer who said parts of the “desolate” north were suitable for fracking chairs a shadowy organisation that helps energy companies network with politicians, ambassadors and civil servants, an investigation by Corporate Watch, revealed in the Mirror, has found. Lord Howell, the father-in-law of George Osborne, chairs the Windsor Energy Group (WEG), whose sponsors and supporters include BP, Shell and British Gas.
https://corporatewatch.org/news/2013/au ... or-dungeon
...and there's still no logic or a shred of evidence to say that 'fracking' is OK...indeed the polar opposite is true....masses of public money has already been sprayed at it though...but that's OK, of course (unless they're foreigners or they employ foreigners)
