According to one person BTL at the Groan it was all the fault of that dastardly puppetmaster Ed Miliband, forcing that really lovely Theresa May to utterly abuse the Parliamentary procedure and pretend that a vote for one thing means that it's indicative of support for something else.
I guess this whole new "tag on whatever you want to a vote and pretend it gives you a mandate" wheeze means that the Government can now slip through whatever they want without really talking about it. I look forward to the forthcoming "Aren't kittens lovely / Bring back slavery for the poor" Bill.

Good Morning from a rather wet and wild Wales!
And to make my morning better here comes Nick Robinson.
Aha, Downing Street calls Labour's debate the day before the R&S by-election a "stunt" coming from a party of stunts I will treat that with the derision it deserves.

Re: EAW dabate; watched the whole thing. Ken Clarke as my least worst Tory mostly good form except for his wilful misrepresentation of the Lisbon Treaty. Labour securedcan opt out for this very reason; he can't blame them because the Tories can't get agreement with 40 or so of their backbenchers.
David Davis also in the better half saying "Well, she SAYS there'll be a vote tomorrow, but how do we know we can trust her." Because promising a vote and then not delivering would be the act of a duplicitous, contemptible - oh, I see what he did there.

Re: Tuesday 11th November 2014
Just been listening to a 'debate' on R4 about payday loans and so forth which barely touched on the real reason for them growing in recent years. Only towards the end did the think tank wonk mention 'low productivity' in a macroeconomic sense. Barely able to contain my excitement I thought, he's going to mention 'low wages and insecure jobs' and lo, he did, but barely paused as he missed the central issue completely.
We have people going to payday loans sharks (they're not proper companies) because of the economic model in the UK, and what that does to jobs, both in availability and pay levels. Few decent well-paid jobs + job insecurity + mass unemployment = rise of payday loan sharks, all of which can be summed up as social disaster brought on by a completely shit neoliberal economic model that rewards only the rich. That Times editorial - which I can't access - appears to grasp this. Pity so few others do.
PS - Happy birthday mbc1955!

Happy birthday mbc1955 and belated birthday wishes to Giselle.
Is this the one you mean yahyah?
Today I started my first full week in my new role running the day-to-day operations of our election campaign. As you can imagine, it's been straight in at the deep end...
But I wanted to introduce myself to you before the day is out, because the role you decide to play in this campaign is vitally important.
We have less than six months to win this election and make Ed our next prime minister, and we are focused on the hard work of making that happen.
So here's our first big task together: this Saturday we'll be taking our campaign out into the battleground seats that will decide what happens in May.
Let's come out fighting and show the true strength of the Labour movement — because no party can match us when it comes to the number or passion of our volunteers. So, Colleen, will you show up for Labour this weekend?
Yes, I'll volunteer on Saturday.
I can't volunteer this weekend, but I'll show my support online.
We're under no illusion about how the Tories plan to conduct their campaign. They will lie about our policies, they will refuse to tell the truth about their own record — and of course, they will be bankrolled by millionaire donors and cheered on by friends in the media.
Our strategy is different. We have a leader who will make a great prime minister, we have policies that will change the country for the better, and we have you. Our plan relies on our volunteers winning this election house by house, street by street, community by community — talking to people in the key seats that will decide the election.
So when I say the outcome of the next election depends on you, I really mean it. We can't outspend the Tories, but we can out-organise them. Say you'll show up for Labour on Saturday.
(And if you're not able to volunteer this weekend, say you'll donate to make sure our field team has the supplies they need.)
This is a fight for nothing less than the chance to turn around Britain's future. I've laid out the scale of the challenge bluntly for you below, but as Ed said last week, I know we are equal to it. So, let's get out there and win.
Best wishes,
Lucy

Vice Chair of Labour's General Election Campaign

Happy Birthday MBC1955, and a belated Happy Birthday to Giselle.
Good article in the New statesman about last night's shambles; unlike The Sparrow they have, correctly imo, declared it as a win for Labour, especially with the opportunity to inflict some extra damage on Dave's credibility the day before R & S.

Aww shucks. Thank you everyone for your kind wishes. I am currently devouring new books and have a raid on Central Manchester planned for a little later. As a birthday wish, I would like World Peace, the opening of the ground to suck in the entire Conservative Party or the correct numbers for tonight's EuroMillions (just don't ask which one I'd take first...)

Polly Toynbee was questioning on Twitter last night whether this should be referred to Ofcom, as a clear example of political bias. Mind you, the Kippers would then start screaming that they were being gagged.letsskiptotheleft wrote:Good of C4 to give Farage free publicity, he's really in need of it isn't he?

Africa's current problems have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with colonialism, or slavery or the debt issue. It is entirely due to corruption, stupidity, tribalism and mismanagement.

Creasy is clearly winning the argument though. Isn't capping the interest rate exactly what they refused to do a while back ...?New payday loan rules to cap fees, total cost and default charges
Financial Conduct Authority rules will reduce the cost for most borrowers, but debt campaigner Stella Creasy MP says the cap needs to be lower to change behaviour of lenders

Again broke my boycott as I followed a link sent to me by somebody who was incandescent with rage. Having read it, I can fully understand why !

After the multitude of articles based on nothing but a couple of discontented MPs & gossip, the Groan seriously come up with this editorial ????????
