Damning indictment of this Government. I just hope that this information gets through to the population. With the tech unsavy getting most of their political information via the filters of the printed press and the BBC I do worry.

I see TE's been busy
I'll kick off this thread with a link to James Kirkup at the Torygaph. Not one I'd normally promote. but some of the questions he raises here merit some thought IMO.

& who says crime doesn't pay ?
Neville Thurlbeck's main claim to fame apart from finally pleading guilty in the hacking trial is that he allegedly masturbated in front of some suspected swingers in the line of journalistic duty.
He only served 37 days in prison out of a six month sentence.
He's also had police investigations against him in the past for alleged corruption, alleged intimidation of witnesses.
The hacking trial heard that some of his methods were 'akin to blackmail' according to a witness.
Now he's waltzed into the job of Director of Communications for the Retail Ombudsman.
Quite extraordinary.
No time spent in the wilderness, no sackcloth and ashes or genuine remorse it would appear, but back into a high profile job in an organisation that seeks the trust of the public and retail organisations it sets out to adjudicate upon.

@StephenDolan
I note the excluded "disability benefits" parrotted mention(again).DLA/PIP is but only the support component of ESA,whilst the main part is to be frozen. This might seem a moot point but the Government regularly includes ESA in pronouncements of how much they spend on disability, surely not too much to expect journalists to make this clear?.The Government clearly wants to feign protection when of course it is in reality a cut for most.

Tacks were spat last night about his pathetic response to the letter from the Labour MPs for North Wales over the Tory plans to restrict Welsh MPs from voting on matters that directly affect their constituents such as health and transport. He really needs to go. I've just heard from our campaign organiser with targets for people to speak to each week between now and the election. Will be having to put together a series of activity sessions and a good team to get on with it in January. Hit the ground talking and listening.yahyah wrote:Morning.

Meanwhile I'm preparing some info for our Labour PPC to take to the Health Board reflecting the issues being caused by their appalling lack of ability to plan and deliver services for a rural area. Sorry - I can't gloss over this and just praise the powers that be here - the Health Board - IMO and many others judging by what we hear on the doorsteps and in conversation generally - are making piss poor decisions. Running down and taking away key services with nothing alternative let alone enhanced in their place. This week the local paper has a headline story about Pembrokeshire people with relatives in the Carmarthenshire hospital now sleeping in their cars in the car park there. It is simply too expensive and too far to be able to go back and forth. I told you before that clients of mine had to pay £150 for a hotel stay when they were sent for day surgery so far away they couldn't do it otherwise (routine day surgery, nothing specialist) - and then it was cancelled so it was money down the drain. Far from providing more community services here - they are being sucked out at an alarming rate. I know someone who provides care - organised by the health service - whose team has just been relocated and reorganised - he now has to drive up to 40 miles away and back - maybe just to change a pad. It is hell for them trying to provide the services efficiently and with real care now. Previously they had a localish base. The Health Board have just announced that the 'integrated health facility' - no details of what will be provided - in Cardigan will start to be built next autumn. This will be 9 years after it was promised to start. And do we believe them - no.
Right rant over. The main issue for me here is what seems to be a lack of clear planning for rural health services ....

Apparently Cowley is "A distinguished voice of the left" according to the Maul, which means we should take his ramblings seriously. Funny, I always thought he was the editor who tacked the New Statesman to the right. They probably think Mel Phillips and Julian Glover are leftists too, as they used to write for the Guardian

I'm rather doubtful about the assertion in this piece about there being no more 'left' and 'right'. Surely the dividing line between those who believe in equality and those who believe in every man for himself is as stark as ever. The real grey area is how to achieve equality, if you belong to the left, and how to benefit oneself, if you belong on the right. In terms of whether we open up to the world or close the doors, it isn't a straight case of one or the other will achieve equality. Being part of the mostly socially democratic EU has the ability to make the UK a more equal place to live. TTIP has the potential for the exact opposite. Likewise for those on the right, free trade brings opportunities for personal investment and enrichment but it also carries the evil of being exposed to greater competition for the same pot. I firmly believe peoples' basic instincts towards left and right are as strong as ever, it's just the route to those ends that has become obscured. And of course 'left' and 'right' have never operated in isolation but are also influenced by a tendency towards liberalism or authoritarianism.
In a complex world, I find myself supporting Ed Miliband not because of specific policies or political ideology but because I believe he is coming from a perspective of wanting to achieve equality and fairness. In the wake of a collapsing neoliberal economy it is as yet unclear how equality can be achieved against the backdrop of a resistant and powerful global elite, but electing someone with principles based on a belief in equality is a good place to start, I think. I also notice that since Osborne's Autumn Statement, the media have become slightly more critical of our current trajectory, which reflects the other point about 'left' and 'right' that the above article fails to really grasp, which is that it isn't black and white, one or the other, but a sliding scale that most people slip around on throughout their lives. I sense a possibility that we are about to hit a tipping point where the UK's slide to the right is reaching its limits and the Tories are about to find themselves somewhere to the right of that limit. Is it possible Osborne has just gifted the election to Labour? I like to think so, but I probably shouldn't get too complacent. James Kirkup is certainly right about one thing, voters are confused about what parties stand for right now, a danger that shouldn't be underestimated.

To add to Toby's festive pick of the shits (sorry, I do think the expletive is justified in this case) here's a cracker of an article from the Northern Echo.
and he then details the car crash record of IDS ... it's very bloody. All together now - boo, hiss, it's IDS
http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/featur ... _it_s_IDS/
IT is pantomime season, so it’s time to pick the politician most deserving of your festive boos, hisses and catcalls.
My villain is someone who boasts of transforming our complex benefits system to “make work pay”, but who has overseen a car-crash of expensive bungling and delay.
His CV also includes the bedroom tax and botched new disability benefits, both of which are causing huge suffering to the most vulnerable people.
And, when confronted with evidence that his policies have sparked an epidemic of hunger, he stuck two fingers up to the Archbishop of Canterbury and others most worried about it.
Not only that, when challenged, he delivered the most outrageous porky to try to disguise his lack of action on food banks…a blatant untruth.
Yes, my pantomime villain is Iain Duncan Smith who, incredibly, is still in his job after nearly five years of this dismal, disastrous record...

Thanks for this eloquent response to Kirkup. I agree. I've been saying for a while, and especially during the Referendum campaign, that I would like people such as Miliband speak up for socialist internationalism, the simple idea that ordinary folk all round the world will have better lives if they connect, organise and collaborate.Willow904 wrote:Afternoon All.PaulfromYorkshire wrote:Morning All!

Afternoon.
Have got my Christmas reading sorted.
The library had a copy of the new Nye Bevan biography by Nicklaus Thomas-Symonds.
Reviews seem positive. The author has already written about Atlee.
Looking at one of the pics from the book, what stands out is that at 48 he was probably the youngest in the 1945 Labour cabinet.
Very different from our current political bunch where youth seems to win out over age.

Re: Saturday, 20th & Sunday, 21st December 2104
I've had the bits of bone come out of the socket before, but this is a sharp little splinter has just begun to poke from the top of my gum.TechnicalEphemera wrote:No, I think this is relatively normal when you have teeth removed, but you probably should check whether anything needs looking at. If I disappear again, it'll be because I'm having further dental trouble. Had two teeth pulled with great difficulty a few weeks back, it's never stopped hurting and now I find I've got sharp bits of bone poking through my gums. It's obviously working its way out. Must have been something the dentist did wrong. But I'm not going back!
I had a massive infection set in straight away. Had to go back to have the sockets cleaned out and was put on strong antibiotics but it's still draining and my jaw and cheek are painful, but I've had far worse.
The problem is I go to the dentist and come out in a worse state. No way am I going before Christmas!

Imposters? Is that a Ukip-ism for candidates?Ukip tells members: ‘Don’t go on Twitter’
Nigel Farage’s party moves to ban unauthorised use of Ukip logo after embarrassing string of gaffes
A spokesman for Ukip said the move had been made, in part, because imposters were using the Ukip logo on racist social media accounts in order to embarrass the party. (Guardian)

Remember a similar case exposed a few years ago where a couple were separated in a similar way - one of them was blind, the other had other serious health problems? I seem to remember one was described as the other's eyes, and the other was their partners legs - very heartbreaking scenario. It was a Gloucestershire council as I remember it that very callously separated them - and paid a huge price when their son went public and the press went ballistic. I thought it was established then that this kind of thing is just really poor practice and shouldn't happen. The Gloucestershire council back tracked and issued statements to that effect anyway.Separated at Christmas by council diktat: Couple married for 50 years left distraught after social workers refuse to let them stay in same nursing home despite doctor's approval
A distraught elderly couple face Christmas apart because of council rules
Raffaello Gerra, 84, and his wife Isabel, 70, have been married for 50 years
Mr Gerra cannot leave his hospital bed to visit his wife in her nursing home
Doctors say he should join Mrs Gerra in her care home but council say no
Milton Keynes Council say retired hotelier needs six-week assessment first
Their daughter says keeping parents apart is a 'box-ticking exercise'

I'm hoping Milton Keynes gets it act together quick. The health and quality of life benefits for both from them being together will far outweigh any so called gains from him being assessed and then, most likely by the sound of it, kept apart from his wife. And I fail to see why the assessment can't be carried out in the nursing home - this is what was supposed to happen with lots of the national service frameworks - proper integration, collaboration and training so that different disciplines of health / social care workers could carry out single assessments.
Working on the wild side.

I got it as a Christmas present from Mr. Citizen!yahyah wrote:Afternoon.
