Last year it was a 10% increase at least. Which is shocking, considering we were one of the initial pilot areas. If anything, we should be seeing things getting better as a pilot area, not worse. Half a decade is long enough to show the government it’s not working. But they don’t care.”

I remember back in the 1980s that a shocking amount of benefits that people were actually entitled to, went unclaimed.HindleA wrote:https://www.sense.org.uk/get-support/in ... -payments/

Would imagine that things haven't got much better since?

Similar considerations,it ain't easy outlining in intimate detail .I just think the "needy/vulnerable" narrative doesn't help before the relentless horror stories. No price could be put on the physchological and other health benefits of self organising ,providing employment etc ,remaining active ,rather than at best passive receiver of the soggy wet flannel and dash.IMHO.

Government figures released today show that up to an estimated £10.1 billion of pension credit, housing benefit and income support were left unclaimed in a single year (2016/17)

To state the obvious £10 billion is quite a lot of money!

Responsible and successful care provision requires time enough to complete that work. Are surgeons paid by the hour?HindleA wrote:https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00074hg

I completely agree with you. Needing help doesn't define a person.HindleA wrote:Similar considerations,it ain't easy outlining in intimate detail .I just think the "needy/vulnerable" narrative doesn't help before the relentless horror stories. No price could be put on the physchological and other health benefits of self organising ,providing employment etc ,remaining active ,rather than at best passive receiver of the soggy wet flannel and dash.IMHO.
Some of the finest work I've ever done included caring for people so they could remain in their home, heal and have a social life. It was work I did professionally, my job description well-defined, my responsibilities clearly negotiated between myself and those I helped. What I couldn't do, I didn't and it wasn't a surprise to anyone when those times came. Others provided what I couldn't. I often thoroughly enjoyed my work. A few times I thought I shouldn't be paid for it. A few others I thought no one could pay me enough to continue. I always had time enough leaving those I cared for safe and stabilised when it was time for me to go. The time constraints imposed on care workers and those they're caring for is an unacceptable, unsafe condition.

It's difficult and not typically well-paid work. I've known many good care workers; not everyone can do it regardless of training. I can't think of a more inappropriate, unredeemable workplace condition than stopwatch care.citizenJA wrote:---

According to Dan Bloom at the Mirror, Boris Johnson’s chief adviser on Brexit, David Frost, argued earlier this year that it would be a mistake for the UK to agree to continue matching EU rules on workers’ rights after Brexit. (Politics Live, Guardian)
