Re: Friday 25th April 2025
Lovely morning here, 15° sunny and a breeze, off to the pool !
I switched off Toady smartly this morning when they began the wittering on Trump's 'peacetalks' . Went to France Culture interviewing an astrophysicienne on the Trump War against science . Hundreds of US scientists are looking for jobs here, but .... budgets are limited ! FR not in the UK situation of firing hundreds of lecturers but not that much better .

" No 10 states Starmer's claim that favouring either EU or US would be 'false choice'
Absolutely right, I mean honestly who could resist 'kissing Trump's fat arse' for a ton of chlorinated chicken and hormone fed beef, when the alternative is limitless free trade with Europe?
Well actually!
Labour's Lost, Really Lost! "

Q. 'the No 10 spokesperson said that it was a statement of fact that the EU was our largest trading, but that the PM thought having to choose between the EU and the US was a “false choice”.'
I really don't know who is advising Starmer or his comms team but they are really fucking awful. There was a glimmer of positivity for Labour voters and what happens? It's snuffed out as fast as fucking possible, dragging defeat from the jaws of victory.
It's getting really hard to carry on supporting them.

Gosh, I'd forgotten he even existed --
" Lies fueled Santos’s political rise. He fabricated college degrees, invented Wall Street credentials, falsely claimed to be Jewish, and said his grandparents fled the Holocaust. He even asserted he lost employees in the Pulse nightclub shooting — a lie condemned by LGBTQ+ groups.
But what began as résumé inflation turned criminal. According to federal prosecutors and a House Ethics Committee report, Santos used his campaign account as a personal piggy bank. He made luxury purchases from Ferragamo and Hermès, spent thousands at casinos, paid for Botox, and subscribed to OnlyFans—all with donor money.
The House Ethics Committee’s November 2023 report confirmed many allegations and revealed even more. It detailed how Santos wired himself $20,000 from his campaign, made undisclosed withdrawals near his Queens apartment, and misled contributors about where their money was going.

That same month, Santos announced he would not seek reelection. A week later, the House expelled him in a bipartisan vote, making him only the sixth lawmaker in U.S. history to be removed by their peers. "

Re: Friday 25th April 2025
To be honest I think the Chinese are being too kind.
One of my most abiding memories of visiting the Southern US in the 90's was seeing people as wide as four normal humans dragging oxygen cylinders along behind them on wheels as they gasped and waddled their way to the nearest cheap diner. In such a place in Las Vegas I witnessed a man so fat he broke a metal stool as he sat eating his enormous breakfast at the counter. Instead of apologising he insisted they gave him his gargantuan breakfast for free due to the inconvenience of him having to move to another stool. And they did. I was dumbfounded.
In the interest of fairness my friend's dad was so fat he kept breaking bar stools so they eventually installed a old dentists chair at the bar for him (he's long dead and it's still there) but that was a unique situation whereas the obese yanks were numerous and difficult to avoid (often literally).
If it seems like I'm fat shaming I'd just say my friend's dad was one of the most splendid fellows I've ever had the pleasure to know, and with the Yanks it was the freakish nature of it, I've never seen anything like it before or since. Anywhere.
Though I did once see a guy I lived with blow up like a balloon over the course of a week but that was due to alcoholism and liver failure. He ended up looking 9 months pregnant and went a lurid shade of yellow. He spent a while in hospital but he's still alive and works for Leeds Utd.

Re: Friday 25th April 2025
Some of us are lucky. The male line in my family seems immune to corpulence despite an excessive thirst for alcohol, whereas my poor Mum spent half her life following weight watchers diets eating rice cakes and Ryvita trying to control her weight.
In hindsight weirdly she seemed happier than us.
