When I said to 'er indoors that Orient were playing at home on Tuesday, she pointed out that supporters probably sit the requisite distance away from each other so there shouldn't be a problem.

I'm in a particularly difficult and stressful situation with two children off long term sick I had been hoping to re-introduce to school in the coming weeks and months. My daughter has been unwell and off school for the last 18 months with CFS/ME. She does online learning, but has been getting a lot better lately and was looking forward to going back to school part-time to see her friends. It's going to be tough on her to wait but a virus could trigger a relapse so I may have to insist she stays home. My son meanwhile has GCSEs this year but has been off since Christmas after being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. He's on steroids now and getting better and we were planning for him to return to school for the last couple of weeks of term but now I'm wondering if that's a good idea. School closures would take the decision out of my hands, which would be a relief in a way, but would also prevent my son from getting important support in the run up to the exams (he has ASD and has been struggling generally with secondary school). I fear this latest development is going to pretty much put the kibosh on him doing well in his GCSEs Luckily his grandma very kindly bought him a new laptop after his broke so at least he'll be able to access anything online from the comfort of his bed! Unlike my daughter, he would be quite happy with enforced no school. At the end of the day I just want the government to do whatever they can to keep everyone well and safe.
Obviously important Johnson didn't hint this yesterday, parents might do something rash like start planning how they'll deal with it.Teachers warned to expect possible month-long school closure due to coronavirus

1. We are about 4 weeks behind Italy in the cycle of this ...
2. So we don't need to do anything specific yet, like Italy didn't until things have clearly spread at lot more...
3. And we'll take more steps then, when it's happened, rather than now, to try to stop it happening...
4. Because whatever we do now won't make any difference at all...
I might be wrong, that might not be what they're saying, but that's what it sounds like. Countries are banning 'gatherings of 500 people or more'. That's breaktime here.
It's difficult to know what they're trying to achieve other than putting off the point at finding out how inadequate we've become at dealing with a genuine crisis.
And I've seen different things but it seems to be the case that people are saying that if schools close it makes sense for them to stay closed until the peak of the virus has passed - and that means many weeks, months really, rather than a fortnight or so. I had been thinking they were just delaying making a decision until it could lean closures up against the Easter holidays. One of our SLT is clearly running around with tech people trying to set up new virtual learning platforms for us...

BBC News literally had an Italian minister on a few days ago saying learn from our experience, act early. Most other European countries are heeding their warning. What this exposes, more than anything, is that most other European countries have the capacity within their economy and public services that ten years of austerity and negligent Tory rule has decimated in the UK.

I think some countries have closed secondary schools but not primary? Presumably not as disruptive and here it would also solve the problem of poor kids starving without school dinners. What a thing to have to say.

Why is the government relying on nudge theory to fight coronavirus?
Why is the government relying on nudge theory to fight coronavirus?
I read their book, which was quite interesting for three or four pages and then utter bollocks. "Of course you can't possibly force children not to buy unhealthy food at dinner time, you have to just encourage them to choose healthier options". That was the level of thought in it - libertarian bollocks saying you could never make people do things, only suggest and encourage. The UK government’s strategy is influenced by nudge theory, an idea first popularised by the behavioural economist Richard Thaler and political scientist Cass Sunstein. “Nudging” uses insights about our mental processes to change our behaviour through coaxing and positive assertion. Rather than forcing us to do things, nudging tweaks the environments in which we make choices – for example by requiring people to opt out of organ donation, rather than opting in.

I've been wavering about which direction to go in research-wise and decided against going this year. Just as well I hadn't booked flights and hotel.

An internationally coordinated response was what Darling was calling for this morning on Today.
In the coronavirus crisis, our leaders are failing us

In the coronavirus crisis, our leaders are failing us
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... rdon-brown
Why, as the disease engulfs more than 100 countries, has there been no consistent, coordinated global approach not just to tracking, testing and travel but to openly learning from each other about the relative merits of quarantine and social distancing? And why, when a world recession now threatens, is there not yet an attempt at a combined effort on the part of governments and central banks to deliver a global economic response?
Instead, ours is a divided, leaderless world and we are all suffering from the tendency to go it alone: an initial cover-up in Wuhan; China’s delayed reporting to the international community; the World Health Organization (WHO) meekly agreeing that the crisis was “moderate”; and even when on 30 January it apologised and declared an international emergency, still the world continued to receive confused travel advice.

Trump's turn.
Compare "this will pass" to "your love ones will die" . Which one's more reassuring, I wonder?
Compare paring back to only testing in hospital to 1.4m tests being made available for widespread testing. Which one gives the impression of taking the pandemic seriously?
Compare expert involved in responding to the HIV crisis to a 'nudge unit'. Which has real world experience of dealing with communicable diseases?
Yep, I'm afraid our PM (and the people around him) is officially more useless and incompetent than Donald Trump. Heaven help us.
