Tying yourself up in miles of bloody contracts is another of the disadvantages of privatisation/sub-contracting. Leads to lawyers making fortunes when anything goes slightly adrift.
A publicly-owned system is simple. Obvious decisions on running fewer trains can be made in a few minutes.
* Mention of Grant Martyn Green Shapps tends to make me laugh at any rate .

Well, after last night Biden is going to be the Democratic nominee barring some total "black swan" event.
I hope it goes well, but I fear the worst.

Some of my family members in the US got the virus, became very ill and most have recovered. Mother hasn't been tested for it, to my knowledge. She suffers from emphysema and had been in the hospital recently with pneumonia. She's recovering at home. She's got 24-hour home care. She's lovely company with others' families.

Good day to bury bad news? The Department of Transport refuses to publish its internal report into London's Garden Bridge scandal which cost taxpayers £46 million. Its reason: it would prejudice the commercial interests of the Garden Bridge Trust - in liquidation since April!
If I'm not here, then I'll be in the library. Or the other library.

From the G liveblog:
I suspect it's not a coincidence that donations to the Tory party from insurance companies have grown significantly since Cameron became leader. They certainly aren't the party of the small business owner any more, that's for sure.Gareth Bentham, a joint pub landlord in Altrincham, said Boris Johnson’s decision to urge people to avoid pubs means he and thousands of other landlords won’t be able to claim for the coronavirus outbreak on business interruption insurance

Re: Monday 16th March 2020
That clear enough for you, JohnsonThe head of the World Health Organizaion, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has implored governments to test more suspected cases, warning that they cannot fight the pandemic blindfolded.
...[H]e said: “We have not seen an urgent enough escalation in testing, isolation and contact tracing, which is the backbone of the response. The most effective way to prevent infections and save lives is breaking the chains of transmission. And to do that, you must test and isolate. You cannot fight the fire blindfolded. And we cannot stop this pandemic, if we don’t know who is infected. We have a simple message for all countries Test, test, test. Test every suspected case."

Also from the G liveblog:
https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
According to the data in the link here, UK cases are currently doubling every 3 days, so we actually need to slow it down to get to every 5 or 6 days. Or am I missing something? (You'll need to scroll down a bit to find the numbers).According to SAGE [the scientific advisory group for emergencies] it looks as though we’re now approaching the fast growth part of the upward curve. And without drastic action, cases could double every five or six days.

Massive problem for restaurants, pubs, entertainment industries. Government says don't go, but has not enforced closure, meaning none of them can claim insurance.
One event organiser tells me: "If they don't enforce any closures then pretty much the whole arts will go bust."

I am turning into an old get. At least that’s how I flatter myself - others might say I already did that a while back.
Sky’s OMD track last night brought back to mind my days working on the record counter at Boots the Chemist on Market Street (Manchester). Someone wanted “Alone again” but didn’t know who by. With a certain degree of creatitivity I managed to work with them till we worked out it was “Enola Gay”.
