It's not really "our" trade deal, either. It's just the one the EU negotiated which we would have benefited from anyway if we hadn't left. It's good we haven't lost out but we haven't really gained anything from leaving the EU, have we?
I'm still a bit surprised at how much those who advocated Brexit are struggling to identify and communicate genuine material benefits. You'd think there'd be at least one or two real gains, but the more the above type nonsense is trotted out the more I wonder if there is anything to be gained at all. Which is actually quite remarkable, when you think about it.

Brexit was a means to power, so that the ruling class could loot the country, AFAICS.
Plenty of material benefits for the people running the companies getting big PPE contracts. The virus is the icing on the cake, they can't believe their luck.

If I'm honest, I'm a bit surprised that you're surprised there are no real gains, but I can see that they could have done a bit more work on finding a plausible line to spin for the short term. Let people down gently.

To any who are wondering, there is no PMQs today - hard to believe Johnson is unhappy about that.

How teenagers ended up operating crucial parts of England’s test and trace system

'Er indoors, an experienced midwife with a 1st is a Band 6...In its advertisements for this job, the NHS explains applicants must be at Clinician Band 6 level, who will be working as part of a team of “experienced clinicians”. You must have a health or science degree or “demonstrable equivalent experience or qualifications”; experience in “a field related to public health or health and social care services as a practitioner” and “registration with the relevant professional body”. Among your tasks are “conducting a public health risk assessment”, “providing public health advice” and “using your clinical knowledge to help escalate complex cases”. Anyone accepted for this role would be “provided with appropriate training”.
But the workers at the call centre who have been “upskilled” to this level are mostly school-leavers and students, with no relevant qualifications. While the job is officially advertised at between £16.97 and £27.15 per hour, they are all being paid the minimum wage, which means £6.45 for the 18- to 20-year-olds (most of them) and £8.72 for over-25s.

Obviously those currently in charge of Brexit have motivations not especially in the public interest, that goes without saying. There was a range of people in support, though, even talk of a left-wing type "Lexit". It's more that general lack of anything positive that could come of it, from any angle, that's so depressing. How an entire Parliament managed to lead the country into something so unrelentingly negative. Though it makes perfect sense as well. We were lead into the EU as a country precisely because it was the most sensible and beneficial thing to do.gilsey wrote:Brexit was a means to power, so that the ruling class could loot the country, AFAICS.

Re: Wednesday 28th October 2020
I always felt that Corbyn and McDonnell, believing in democracy, were making the best of a bad job. Whistling to keep their spirits up, you might say.
There may have been a time, between joining the EEC and the GFA, when being in the EU might have interfered with what a left-wing Labour govt might want to do, but there never was such a govt and I'm as certain as I can be that by 2016 JC and JM saw that the benefits of staying in outweighed any possible benefit of leaving.
I never bought the line about JC being half-hearted during the campaign.
