Just a holding announcment that the results of the Great #DrawPritiPatel Challenge are currently at Calais in a 1000 lorry convoy, awaiting developments. The results of the #DrawGavinWilliamson Challenge are in a Portoloo outside Ghent, being hosed down with bleach. Laters!

I am slightly baffled that, with everything that’s going on, Starmer seems to be persisting with his planned speech this morning on Scottish devolution.

Now being suggested that the government exaggerated the peril of this "new" virus strain to try and justify Johnson embarrassing himself over (not) "saving Christmas". If our being cut off from the continent (as so many Brexiteers, of course, have long desired) is a consequence of this, I don't think any mere words would sufficegilsey wrote:Anything bad is a surprise to these people.France's ban on UK transport came as surprise, says Grant Shapps

Oddly, Daniele Oddness is introducing Keir Starmer (9,5).
Re: Monday 21st December 2020
I don't know what's worse, having a terrifying new strain of the virus in the UK or having a govt that, by exaggerating the dangers for domestic political purposes, cut us off from the continent 5 days before Christmas.

Last point: It is telling that many of the problems we describe were identified in the inquiries into previous crises (BSE, foot and mouth, swine flu) but not acted upon. Easy to focus during crisis; harder in "peacetime". Need sustained attention to be better prepared next time

I’m sorry, but I can’t think of a much worse moment to try and raise the spectre of Scottish separatism.
I mean right now wouldn’t you consider moving to Scotland if it ditched Westminster and rejoined the EU?
Not even that far for you

Hopeless Minister. Hopeless Government. The government has published incorrect guidance in a leaflet aimed at helping schools explain to staff, pupils and parents how the mass testing programme will work, leaders have been told.
The Confederation of School Trusts (CST) wrote to its members today warning a Department for Education leaflet “contains errors and will be corrected today”.
The leaflet was published on Friday as part of guidance on how schools would administer asymptomatic testing from January, along with a template for letters to send parents and consent forms to carry out the tests.

I can't have been the only one who gave a little cheer when Pipa Crerar layed into Johnson at his press conference earlier.
The look on his stupid face was priceless, like a petulant child being scolded.
I also loved the fact that Grant Shapps was 'surprised' that the French closed the border after his own leader had gone on telly and told everyone there was super virus spreading in the South East of England. Mind you Shapps probably gets surprised by his own feet.

The tale of two attempts to book a Covid test online.
Me.
Filled everything in including my NHS number, lied that I had symptoms, clicked the button, it said they couldn't confirm my identity. Checked on a credit rating site and saw that TransUnion who the government outsourced ID checks to were claiming I'm not on the electoral roll. Total bollocks.
My Brother.
Did the same, but also clicked that he was a key worker (he's a teacher), again total fail. So he tried once more but this time clicked the button saying he'd been referred for a test by a doctor and it miraculously worked.
So for 12 billion quid the only way a teacher could book a covid test online was to lie.
Wonderful stuff.

You know things are bad when you turn over to BBC2 to watch Newsnight, see that The Revenant is on instead and think 'Ah what a relief, this is much more cheerful'.
Re: Monday 21st December 2020
"Virulent virus variant" is a gift to TV correspondents with a penchant for alliteration, isn't it? I wish they'd get to grips with the fact that the words "virus" and "vaccine" are not interchangeable, though. They keep making that mistake (which they never bother to correct), and it's annoying me.

He's brilliant at it. I might not like the fellow but credit where it's due. He does his job very well.
The fact that this regularly makes him look like a total buffoon with no scruples whatsoever doesn't seem to bother him at all.
