Lord Sumption being called out as a eugenicist on the Big Questions this morning was rather fun (though his utterly grim comments certainly weren't)

He isn't wrong to advocate in the interests of children and working age people but the idea that their needs should be at the expense of the lives of "less valuable" people is grim when much of the negatives experienced by the former - barriers to online education due to lack of equipment, or loss of earnings through business closures etc - are easily addressed by government.AnatolyKasparov wrote:Watched that and thought some of the other participants were admirably restrained towards him.

It took until nearly the end of the show for this point to be raised - that government could compensate businesses and individuals affected by lockdown more effectively - and thus value all lives equally - but choose not to.

I think we'd all agree Sumption isn't an idiot and shouldn't be lumped with Young, Fox et al, and his warnings and arguments about this government granting itself unprecedented legal powers are genuine and have merit. What's clear however is he seems unable to see past his own professional and intellectual concerns and biases resulting in a set of priorities which we would regard to be warped. This doesn't make him wrong, it simply gives him a different perspective, one which has led him to the point of appearing on Sunday morning TV and giving the impression that he's an absolute monster. And that's fine, he should be allowed to do that because, unlike Young and the rest of that degenerate clique of attention seekers, he genuinely seems to believe what he's saying.

Re: Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th January 2021
I remember watching this woman on CH4 News a couple of years ago. I say watching, most of it was me shouting at the TV.
Well here she is now.
Family-run business risks losing £50,000 worth of shellfish after Brexit delays at French border
https://www.walesonline.co.uk/business/ ... t-19622485
What does she expect? Sympathy? Other people's money?
Get to fuck.
https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/11833 ... -shellfish'I voted out for my grandchildren!' Businesswoman says £40,000 Brexit hit is worth it.
Well here she is now.
Family-run business risks losing £50,000 worth of shellfish after Brexit delays at French border
https://www.walesonline.co.uk/business/ ... t-19622485
Now what I find incredible here is I can clearly recall the CH4 News journalist explaining to her all of the problems she would face exporting live shellfish to EU markets if Brexit went ahead and she simply refused to believe any of it. And yet now she has the gall to complain when all of it turns out to have been true. Her family and her parents before her have been sending live shellfish to Spanish customers every week, but she says she is feeling "exceedingly unimportant" as the authorities try to make Brexit work.
"The powers that be should have been able to give us guidance," she said.
"We've had no opportunity to practice. Not even a week to practice and implement these new rules.
"I'm exhausted and ready to jack it in. I can't keep up with the stress of this again.
...........
Ms Edwards said it was not only her business affected and other lorries waiting for the ferry crossing had also been refused.
The UK government says it is in close contact with the industry to address any issues.
However, Ms Edwards said the current situation would "cripple" her business and many fishers had been told to tie up next week.
What does she expect? Sympathy? Other people's money?
Get to fuck.

vis a vis fish-related cognitive dysfunction above:
Brings to mind people who flew to .... [complete holiday destination of choice here] over the summer and then complained that the government had allowed them to go and then made them go into to quarantine on return (because corona numbers changed during the two weeks they were away). It's almost as if the freedom to choose (to do something permitted but unwise) doesn't come hand in hand with taking responsibility (for making an unwise choice).

Having had a look on the Iplayer at all of what Sumption said this morning I'm going to retract my earlier statement. He said a number of truly idiotic things. Right from the start he makes a number of obviously false claims about how government interventions have had no impact on infection rates which is patently absurd. Then goes on to offer the same simplistic solution that only the old and vulnerable should have to give a shit.
I remember him being New Labour's favourite lawyer.
Imagine going from this -

To making a cunt of yourself on Sunday morning telly.
