My mother's now reached the end of life care stage, the palliative nurse reckoned she's got a couple of weeks at most. My brother and I are taking it in turns to travel up there so our dad's not having to deal with it on his own (and keep an eye on him). So I'm back home for a few days (which is just as well, I've been away so much recently I'm almost out of clean underwear).

At least it was sunny but what this photo doesn't show was the relentless cold wind coming off the North sea which blew for the entire time I was up there. Atmospheric arsehole.

Any women who don't fully fit someone in authority's idea of how a person should present, is now going to have to prove themselves. Truly a win for women everywhere.

Though I must confess it's a bit alarming that the music I listened to as a youth has become so old it belongs in a museum.

Mind you I had some dumb afternoon quiz show on earlier and when the host asked a young lass what she thought 'Dad rock' was she said The Prodigy.

Life is Hell at the local hospital

When I was at my mum's nursing home on Sunday looking quite obviously hungover a lovely member of staff was so alarmed by my dishevelled, deathly appearance she insisted upon bringing me food and drinks. I got fish and chips and 3 cups of coffee! Which didn't entirely cure me but at least helped me see properly which I'd been struggling with up to that point.

I also found myself apologising to her about Starmer's crap calling her and her colleagues 'unskilled' which she appreciated. He's such a prick.

Apparently the plan is to get people like me off sickness benefits and into care homes to do her job. I wouldn't last a day.

Shush child. As far as I recall you've not even reached the big 5-O. Which an article about early deaths told me today was the point at which we pass our prime. Apparently dying after 50 is fine but if you do it before you make your country look bad in international comparisons. It's unpatriotic. Farage will be at your bedside giving you mouth to mouth while jabbing you with a Union Jack on a stick trying to keep you alive.

It's funny, I've been reading a book by Carrie Fisher about her (hilarious) struggles with drug and alcohol addiction (which she enjoyed). Her mother (Debbie Reynolds) had spent a fortune on shrinks of all kinds of flavours, got Cary Grant to to try to talk her out of taking too much acid, all sorts of mad shit. But it was only after she stopped drinking and taking drugs that the bipolar kicked in. Which was way worse. She'd masked it, kept it under control, had been only slightly crazy before sobriety made her go completely round the bend.

Why am I mentioning that? According to the article the biggest cause of premature death in under 50's in the UK is drug and alcohol abuse. We don't have celebrity shrinks or film stars calling us to give us cautionary tales. All we have is a completely inadequate and dysfunctional mental health system, overworked GP's, and talking therapy where barely trained councillors read from a script. Everyone's trying their best but it's shit.

It's all very well a girl half my age telling me I shouldn't drink or take drugs while asking me to meditate because that's what it says in her training manual, because Carrie was right. Drink and drugs do help. They help a lot more than the antidepressants the hard pressed GP's offer. Trust me, been there done that. Never want to feel joyless again.

My rambling point being, without a functioning mental health care system people will continue to seek out illicit relief and drink and drugs are such a leveller I can read a book by Princess Leia and empathise.

Except the Paul Simon stuff. Don't get me wrong 'Simon and Garfunkel's' greatest hits is a great album but he was never the genius she clearly worshipped even after their divorce.
