Really interesting second half to this week's Trashfuture podcast. They have an interview with a UK lawyer looking to bring prosecutions against UK nationals who have committed war crimes in Gaza.

Good morning.

Ed Davey may have said he boycotted this on a point of principle, but he certainly spared himself a very dull evening.

Might be a bit later because there's football on but I'll get there eventually.

We had a 'Trump special' Question Time tonight from London. If it had been an American show you'd be hearing calls for it to be taken off the air tomorrow by the same morons who spent years whining about 'cancel culture' (gone a bit quiet about that now haven't they?)

For Labour we had Douglas Alexander. Douglas is known by Scots as the man who single handedly lost nu-Labour Scotland so Starmer has just brought him back from the political grave and made him Scottish Secretary. Outstanding. This evening Douglas passionately claimed that free speech and the right to disagree were fundamental to a healthy democracy. I'm sure we all agree. What I have a problem with however is he said it with a straight face after his own government have removed the whip from an unprecedented number of their own MPs for disagreeing with them while proscribing protesters against genocide as terrorists. Anyone coming into the debate not knowing who Douglas was would have listened to his language in regard to immigration, his fulsome praise of Charlie Kirk, his arse licking of Trump, and come to the conclusion he was on the right of politics. And they wouldn't be wrong.

For Donald Trump we had Piers Morgan. Suffice it to say Piers faced tumbleweed all evening as he performed mental gymnastics (or more like intellectual slapstick) in a doomed and pitiful effort to defend the repulsive orange freak he calls a friend. Even the Trump fans in the audience (and there were a smattering of them) sat on their hands presumably cringing like the rest of us at his obsequious crawling. Quite what he gets out of it god knows. Maybe he gets invited to special parties hosted by Donald on a remote island where they hunt gnomes and rape fairies after pulling their wings off. I'm allowed to say things like that because according to Piers it's fine to say what you like, no matter how offensive, as long as it's not breaking the law. Which is presumably why he keeps being sued so often. He really is a dick.

For the Conservatives we had James Cleverly. Ah good old James, still boisterously bullshitting like none of the string of political embarrassments that are his career ever happened. Even Douglas Alexander was able to swat him like a fly. 'Taxes are too high!' says James. 'Oh yeah? What happened under your government?' asks Douglas. 'Immigration is too high!' says James. 'Oh yeah? What happened under your government? asks Douglas. Rinse and repeat. Labour could have had a 5 year old on repeating the same response and James would have fared no better. It's not just Reform that are dooming the Tories, it's they're own record in government. Which in its own way is terrifying, because despite what you might think of James, at least he's toilet trained which is more than can be said for the people threatening to usurp him and his party.

For all that's good we had Bonnie Greer. Bonnie was taking no shit, especially from Piers Morgan whom she slapped down hilariously on at least a couple of occasions to much applause. In fact on an evening when applause was hard to come by as the anti-Trump panellist she was raking it in. At one point some weirdo in the audience (he seemed to wearing some old sea captains coat) started rambling about open borders and she stuck her claws in and refused to let him go even as he writhed. It was great, exactly what we want to see, call these idiots out, force them to back up their bullshit and let people watch as they flail. The problem is it shouldn't be the job of an American playwright to have to do that when there's a Labour MP on the panel.
