Interesting article by Kellner.
https://yougov.co.uk/news/2015/04/10/ho ... -election/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The number of Conservative and Lib Dem voters that would transfer their vote to Labour to stop the SNP makes it SNP 52%, Labour 37%. Given this is an average across the head to head seats (and based upon the shocking current polling figures) things could get interesting.

Populus also have a 2% Labour Lead (31:33:8:16:6). The underlying position (Clipped Weighted Moving Average) seems to be a 1% Labour Lead but the short term trend since April 1 for the Labour Lead to increase is looking statistically very convincing (R^2=0.82 on 16 observations).
I would expect this to reverse as people get back from holiday next week and serious consideration of economic reality sets in. Previous Labour Bounces have all done this. But right now Labour seems to be on a real bounce, and with the election so close it will need a big correction in the next 3 weeks or so. We shall see... Guardian Election Blog - my emphasis)

I'm not sure that there is still time, though. This is surely a much shorter election campaign and I don't think the Conservatives have the luxury of being able to rip it up and start again - at least not to any great effect. That said, there is still time, let’s not forget that in 1992 the Conservatives pretty much junked their whole election campaign blueprint a third of the way in and John Major got out his soap box…. will Cameron take to his trusty stead[sic] to tour the Shires?
The difference, surely, is that back in 1992 CCHQ still had reasonably competent people in charge. Not to mention a "front man" who was much better liked than Cameron is, *and* much stronger organisation on the ground. Not many tales of them having to pay people to deliver leaflets back then......

Scotland though is the decider and the danger to us getting the Tories right out. I have vowed I'd stick to my party of choice regardless from now on, but after watching the Scottish debates, I'm suddenly hoping the Scots vote tactically. I hear they're going to suffer financially [badly] if they allow Sturgeon free rein and she gets any sort of hold over English Labour. And seeing as they lost the Indy vote, it's sort of weird that SNP now have so much power over Scotland's fate and want to catapult them into all sorts of change that the ones that won the Indy vote didn't necessarily want.

Re: Friday 10th April 2015
Quick response from the Beeb to my complaint the other day. It seems they're in the right and I'm in the wrong as usual:
In other words it got nothing like the coverage that the businessmen's letter did. She's mostly talking about another subject, A&E waiting times, not the letter. Shame I can't get back at them. Thanks for contacting us about our coverage of the letter from senior health professionals to the Guardian.
We reported on the letter in question during BBC News Health Editor Hugh Pym’s report for the ‘News at Ten’ on 7 April, and on the BBC News website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-32206814" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
On the day the letter was published, BBC News widely reported on criticisms of the government’s management of the health service over the past 5 years – which was the crux of the letter. Our main BBC One bulletins looked at recent figures which showed that A&E waiting times in England are the worst since a four hour target was introduced. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt was challenged directly on this point, on the government’s overall management of the NHS and on future spending commitments should the Conservatives win the election during the Radio 4’s ‘The World at One’. The programme also heard from Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham. He was given time to echo the concerns outlined by the doctors in their letter and put forward the Labour Party’s future vision for the NHS.
We believe we have reported on the Coalition’s legacy on health in an impartial and accurate manner. We have reflected the wide of range of opinion and allowed our audience to make up their own minds in their own time.
Thanks again for contacting us.

I think the Plaid dirt digging on Huw is because he & Peter Hain were so publicly critical of Mike Parker.rebeccariots2 wrote:yahyah wrote:Plaid have dug up something our Labour candidate said about English football fans when he was 20.

Interesting though that Plaid have time to take a swipe at Huw Thomas, makes me wonder if they may be getting some positive feedback about Labour on the doorsteps.
Are Plaid still convinced Labour was somehow responsible for the emergence of the story about their candidate calling incomers right wingers etc? Have they produced any evidence - or are they just spending their time looking for dirt to throw?
They found the dirt in the form of the online post on a Welsh speaking forum that is years old, and written when Huw was a student.
Cui bono ? The Lib Dems benefit as both Plaid [the original story about Parker was published by a Lib Dem leaning local paper] & now Labour get negative headlines & Welsh TV reports.
Huw is, I believe filming a response and wholehearted apology for TV.
If I were Miss Marple I'd be suspecting a trail directly from the Libs to the Cambrian News, the editor is widely regarded locally as being a Mark Williams fan. He is desperate to win.

Your suspicions seem fairly sound to me yahyah. Thanks for filling in the gaps. As you say - this only helps the Lib Dems. I wish we could get away from stuff like this. Sadly the incomer and nationalist narratives still seem to surface here at fairly regular intervals - often when there is a contentious or important issue at stake. Our local paper printed letters from people telling the anti badger cull campaigners to go back over the Severn bridge ... regardless of there being solid support for and participation in the campaign by born and bred locals. I was surprised that a local paper would print that kind of stuff ... but then I'd fairly recently arrived from lefty London.yahyah wrote:rebeccariots2 wrote:yahyah wrote:Plaid have dug up something our Labour candidate said about English football fans when he was 20.

Apparently the reason one of the Plaid nats spent hours scouring online for dirt on Huw is because they were angry that Huw [& Peter Hain] were so publicly critical of Mike Parker.

Just to add Rebecca, someone I know who attended the hustings said both Williams and Parker spent more time attacking Huw than each other, which is surprising unless they both see Labour as a threat.
Last year's European elections had the Lib Dems only about 220 votes less than the Labour here, whereas in 2009 the Libs got 3642 and Labour got 1329, not sure if that would get replicated for Westminster though.

That seems to be the pattern here so far - Plaid, Green and Lib Dems targeting Labour in the hustings. Whilst it can be frustrating (because it lets the Tories mostly off the hook) and boring (if you go to several hustings as we do) - it does mean a good candidate can get in a lot of practice at rebuttal and constructively addressing negative points so they become an even better candidate. That's my positive take on it anyway.yahyah wrote:Just to add Rebecca, someone I know who attended the hustings said both Williams and Parker spent more time attacking Huw than each other, which is surprising unless they both see Labour as a threat.

Re: Friday 10th April 2015
I went back to the Beeb, you can if you quote your case number it seems. My reply:
I complained that you gave MASSIVE coverage to a letter from businessmen supporting Tory economic policy, (which is NOT a subject in which they are experts), and then giving no coverage to a letter from senior health professionals expressing concern about the effects of Coalition policy on the NHS, (a subject in which they ARE experts).
Your reply, (which was very swift in fairness), notes that it was mentioned by Hugh Pym in the ten o' clock news and there was an item on your website, (yes, tucked away in Health not Politics). The rest of your reply is utterly irrelevant as it concerns other matters that I did not complain about.
So, that's a 'hidden' website mention and a passing reference on the ten pm news. In other words you are admitting that you scarcely covered it at all. But should you have? That is the crux of my complaint. The three most important topics for voters as evidenced by many opinion polls are NHS, Economy and Immigration. So a letter from 100 businessmen gets massive coverage and leads the bulletins for over 24 hours. Meanwhile, a letter on the NHS from leading healthcare professionals gets virtually NO coverage. What strange logic makes you think that your completely different treatment of these two important issues is unbiased, impartial or in any way acceptable? The simple fact of the matter is that it is completely unacceptable and you should be ashamed of yourselves for allowing a once great institution to plumb such depths!

Very best of luck to @Mike_Fabricant on battling skin cancer. Differences aside, he is one of the real vibrant characters of our politics

So Cameron's @Conservatives need to stage the best Tory recovery in 60 years now to keep Miliband out of No 10? Is that true?

Over at the Guardian's Election Blog (time 18.16) there's a link to a short interview with David Cameron (interviewed by Michael Crick). Brief though it was, I found it quite revealing and, in one respect, very cheering (although the bit which cheered me was no great surprise).

Can't be if their previous poll is correct. Murphy is running a good campaign, he has to keep at it. It may not work but the nastier the Nats get the more they will lose voters.ohsocynical wrote:Peter A. Russell @Planet_Pedro 23 hrs23 hours ago Glasgow, Scotland
