First LOL of the day goes to the G Liveblog --

" Peter Kyle, the business secretary, was telling people to carry on as normal this morning, in the light of concerns about fuel shortages. (See 9.24am.) In an analysis, Heather Stewart, the Guardian’s economics editor, suggests this might be the wrong message."

Two things for me to celebrate in these otherwise bleak times.

I've survived another year (55 today).

And I've got a flat! The bloke who turned me down for a place previously but offered me another came good. Went to see it yesterday. It's an attic flat in the process of being completely refurbished. Decent size, cool views of the city from up high. We shook hands and agreed to have everything signed and paid for by the 10th. So on the plus side I'll be moving out of an (now illegal to live in) Edwardian pantry into a modern freshly done up flat. While on the negative side I'll suddenly have gas central heating at an inopportune moment and no garden. I won't move fully until I've got broadband up and running so it'll probably be a few weeks but hurrah!

Weather permitting today is my usual trip to the sea for what is often my first dip of the year, but it's only just up to 14° and Second Daughter is not available to incite me to action . There's also an onshore breeze which is ... discouraging!

It's her birthday and her uni students ambushed her in chorus first thing today . It was very different in 2009, when she taught in secondary and gave up all her Easter Holiday to interpret my stroked speech to the hospital staff, with me lying there paralysed . Since then when she's available we two have our tradition to celebrate her BD and my survival.

Yesterday I should have been in the local hospital being transfused, but it was cancelled because my new treatment since last December is working and the red blood cell count has at last been going up instead of a slower but still steady decline :-)

So now for a potter in the garden, much of which is pretty jungly from when I had no energy at all for it .

A little something to have in reserve on any Royal Visit would be a reminder that that the Revolution might well have not succeeded without the French Navy and Army , supplies of muskets uniforms gunpowder and a huge amount of financial loans .

Lots of talk about Trump declaring Victory and Walking Away --

Except he's leaving 40,000+ human targets behind in some 8 bases ( Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates ) so what if the Iranians don't suddenly declare Peace ?

He's also been talking about Kharg island since 1988, tho It 'might' be difficult to occupy (IE bodybags) and then is still within even small (handheld!) tactical drone range of the Zagros mountains, let alone heavier rocketry and shaheds .

Some good maps

The office clown Lindsay Graham wants to take it too !
