I went for a couple of drinks earlier in Oakwood, it's a pretty well to do part of Leeds next to Roundhay Park, which is having a festival this weekend (Lewis Capaldi and others). There have been signs up for at least a week saying what roads would be closed and at what time and stewards were in the process of putting cones and barriers out as I passed. While sitting outside the pub enjoying my first pint and befriending Gandalf the Schnauzer the road diversions evidently came into force and all hell broke loose. One after another angry posh folk in expensive cars loudly berated the stewards about not being able to drive wherever they wanted when they were stopped. It was so entertaining half the pub came out to enjoy the show and, I'm afraid to say, heckle and mock our financial betters in a shocking display of class envy. Comfortably middle class folk hooting and laughing at million pound mansion owners. It was pretty funny.

Then within 15 minutes I walked back to my part of the world where a young woman approached me this afternoon, said she was sleeping amongst the trees behind a cafe a few doors down the road, and asked if I could buy her a sandwich.

In addition, like Harborne, Cottrell stands to gain from his relationship with Farage. He is a crypto-gambling entrepreneur involved in an offshore bookmaker, Tether.bet, which uses a digital currency part-owned by Harborne, according to US court documents. Cottrell denies he expected any benefit from his relationship with the Reform leader.

Cottrell is seeking a pardon from President Trump, with whom Farage has close ties, and whose vice-president, JD Vance, he has met a number of times, including on Saturday. Cottrell, who has spoken publicly of his closeness to Farage, recently created a political consultancy offering clients advice on “politics”, “campaigns” and “global business”.

It is unclear what due diligence, if any, Farage performed before accepting Cottrell’s help. Farage knew he was a convicted felon because the pair were travelling back from a Trump rally in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 2016 when Cottrell was arrested and charged with 21 offences for his role in a “dark web” money laundering plot. He later pleaded guilty to wire fraud and spent time in prison in Arizona.
