For it is now abundantly clear that Andy Burnham’s EU policy is going to be virtually identical to that of Keir Starmer. That is most obvious in Burnham’s re-iteration over the summer of his commitment to the manifesto ‘red lines’ (no single market membership, no customs union, no freedom of movement of people, if a reminder is necessary). There should be no surprise in that, either. Politically, it would be very difficult to justify so major a departure from the manifesto without stoking demands for another general election. But in any case, as for Starmer before him, there would be little point in spending political capital on seeking from the EU something which it would be unlikely to grant until it is clear that it has strong and durable support in the UK, and will not be reversed by the next government.

Burnham talks (£) of putting closer ties with the EU at the heart of his economic strategy in order to “add percentage points” to UK growth by, something precluded by his own red lines. The absurdity of these claims is made all the clearer by the way that, at the same time, the British government is engaged in sour wrangling over university tuition fees for EU students as part of the existing reset negotiations, which hardly bespeaks of either boldness or ambition.

“California needs ICE checkpoints at supermarket entrances, gas stations, strip malls, intersections and government buildings, with on the spot deportation for anyone who can’t prove they are in the US legally,” he wrote in a social media post in June 2025.

On social media on Friday, Laura Loomer, the far-right activist and ally of Donald Trump, claimed credit for Yiannopoulos’s detention and wrote that she had previously reported him to ICE.

August bank holiday weekend round these parts means the Black Music festival and West Indian carnival. Previously I lived literally where the carnival set off and ended and next door to the park where the festival takes place. So for over a decade this weekend meant window rattling noise and folks of both sexes pissing in my garden.

Don't get me wrong, the carnival is wonderful, the costumes incredible, and despite not being a lover of reggae I'd happily saunter round the festival seeking out the most alluringly aromatic goat curry stall.

However, after moving nearly a mile away I was hoping to enjoy a modicum of peace but no, some dickhead a couple of streets over is blasting out shit dub reggae on a ridiculously powerful sound system as I type. I reckon I know exactly which house it is as well. It's on the corner of a little side street and a few weeks back 3 black lads sitting outside it told me to fuck off because the street was for black people only.

Obviously I took them to task for their racism and...no of course I didn't. I kept walking and pretended I hadn't heard them, they could have torn me limb from limb had they so wished. In all the years I've lived round here it's the first time I've ever had any shit like that from anyone, black, white, or brown. It made me more sad than anything else.

It won't stop me enjoying the carnival, which will be interesting because the most sought after legendary costume maker died a few months ago so we shall see what his wannabe successors have come up with.

To be fair I left it late because I thought I'd be able to watch it from upstairs in my old place like I used to (I've still got the keys) but unbeknownst to me they'd changed the route so it didn't pass the house and I was screwed.

It must be said though, after the death of the legendary Chapeltown costume maker the costumes that I managed to catch a glimpse of were, let's say, a bit less ambitious. Still a few good ones though and lots of people out enjoying themselves in the sun once it eventually arrived so all good.

Yesterday evening was also fun as the multiple sound systems folk have set up tried to compete with thunder as a storm passed over. It wasn't even a contest, they were like mice squeaking while someone banged a giant gong in the sky.

It's still going on and I'm not going to lie, I got so sick of the noise earlier that I decided to walk until I couldn't hear it anymore. After approximately a mile and a half the reggae was gone and there just so happened to be a pub where I could enjoy a pint out in the sun in blissful peace.

Anyway now that the Summer's politically over let's see what happens. Burnham's had the easiest of starts due to the timing of his coronation, Farage made a tit of himself, and Badenoch inexplicably seems to be clawing back ground.

Looking at the latest polls Labour are leading by a nostril though they're all nigh on statistically neck and neck. Which isn't great but given the state Starmer and his goons left the Labour Party in I'm guessing most of their supporters would take it. They've managed to go from three nil down to drawing at half time. Thing is though, will Burnham's socialism lite with a smile be enough? He's strapped himself into exactly the same financial straightjacket as his predecessor. Which by design leaves little wriggle room. So unless he's got some advisors working for him who have come up with an entirely new theory of economics we're in for more of the same. Cuts for some to fund money for others. The question is will he, like Starmer, punch down or could we see a Labour Party regaining its soul? Attracting people back because they want to vote for them rather than a means to keep Farage (or Badenoch) out.

I've got 70's space reggae in the background now, replete with 'pew pew' lasers noises. it's pretty good to be honest.

The reggae has stopped and and all that remained was this gaunt quiet.

Presumably the police gave them a midnight cut off point, they certainly had enough drones in the air which I could see from my lofty perch. At night they're totally obvious because by law they have to display hazard lights.
